The Heavy Equipment Mechanic ensures the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of heavy maintenance equipment and vehicles used across the operation. ensuring minimal downtime and supporting optimal performance and presentation year-round.
Key Responsibilities:
• Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systems on heavy machinery.
• Perform scheduled and preventive maintenance to minimize downtime.
• Disassemble, repair, and reassemble engines, transmissions, and hydraulic components.
• Operate diagnostic equipment (electronic scan tools, multimeters) and manual tools (hoists, welding gear).
• Maintain accurate maintenance logs (CMMS or manual) and parts inventory.
• Conduct test-runs, adjust system settings, and verify repair quality.
• Order replacement parts, manage supplies, and support field-service operations.
• Comply with safety standards / regulations.
• Collaborate with supervisors, operators, and apprentices, mentor junior staff.
• Liaise with suppliers and contribute to budget planning for parts and tool replacements.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and well-equipped workshop environment.
• Ensure all machinery is safe and compliant with health and safety regulations
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
• Certificate/Diploma in Heavy Equipment Technology/Deisel Technology/Auto Mechanics.
• A minimum 3 years of mechanical maintenance experience
• Hands-on knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, transmissions.
• Proficiency with diagnostic, welding, and measuring tools.
• Ability to read schematics, manuals, and blueprints.
• Physical strength to lift heavy parts and work in challenging environments.
• A valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one.
• Welding and fabrication skills.
• Familiarity with internationally recognized equipment brands such Dawson, Caterpillar.
• Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative.
It is a requirement that the candidate must have a flexible working style as weekends, public holidays and the ability to work extended hours are required.
