Health, Safety and Environment Officer
The University of the West Indies, Open Campus, invites suitably qualified applicants to fill the position of Health, Safety and Environment Officer.
The Officer will develop, implement and maintain an HSE framework to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. The Officer will also inspect and monitor workplace activities to ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations.
Candidates for the position should possess:
➢ a Master’s Degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health or related field. (Persons with a Master in related discipline and a general NEBOSH certificate/diploma will also be given consideration);
➢ knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards; and
➢ five (5) years of work experience with OSHA standards and regulations.
➢ Extensive knowledge of HSE legislation and practices throughout the region.
➢ Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
➢ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
➢ Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
➢ Proficient in technology and equipment used in environmental inspections.
➢ Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
➢ Prepare reports and guidelines in regard to health, safety and environmental policies.
➢ Provide guidance on compliance with safety, health and environmental legislation.
➢ Develop and implement inspection policies and procedures, and a schedule of routine inspections.
➢ Liaise with regulatory agencies on health, safety and environmental matters in order to remain abreast of technical and scientific innovations in safety management.
➢ Collaborate with sister Campuses to co-ordinate the implementation of UWI wide HSE policies and programmes.
➢ Investigate and report occupational complaints, injuries, illnesses or deaths and maintain accurate records of the same.
➢ Review proposals for building developments and make recommendations in line with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
➢ Inspect construction activities to ensure that safety and environmental best practices are employed.
➢ Inspect operations on Open Campus premises (including food establishments) to ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations.
➢ Conduct indoor environmental assessments and coordinate any required environmental testing or remediation work.
➢ Provide secretariat services to relevant Committees including and Departmental Safety Committees.
➢ Prepare and schedule training to cover emergency procedures, workplace safety, and other relevant topics for Departmental Safety Officers and general staff.
➢ Assist with the management of hazardous waste generated on Campus and coordinate waste disposal.
➢ Any other job related duties which may be assigned.
