The HIV Tester / Counselor is responsible for projecting and integrating the Mission and Core Values of the organization within and outside of the Latin America and Caribbean Bureau.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned) 

  • Understands and follows AHF’s operating policies and procedures.
  • Locates new venues and conducts HIV testing and counseling.
  • Elicits from clients HIV risk history including, but not limited to, demographic information, sex history, drug and alcohol use, and past STD infections.
  • Administers oral or finger-stick tests to detect HIV antibodies.
  • Collects and processes specimen samples in accordance with National, State, and Local guidelines.
  • Provides health education and individual risk reduction counseling sessions.
  • Promotes healthy sexual behaviors and praises risk reduction plans adopted by clients.
  • Conducts test-result disclosure and post disclosure counseling as needed and required.
  • Offer clients local community and medical referrals as needed.
  • Documents all required information for reporting purposes.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • 3 years’ working experience in phelbotomy or HIV/Syphilis rapid testing
  • Training and skills to performing phlebotomy, HIV/Syphilis Rapid Tests.
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and related medical and patient care issues.
  • Knowledge of ARVs and STI drug therapies.
  • Knowledge on key population specificities and vulnerabilities.
  • Respect for patient’s confidentiality and having a compassionate approach to their needs is required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Ability to work with multicultural and diverse population.
  • Knowledge of operating desk and portable computing equipment, Windows office software, printers, mobile communication devices, and communication apps for intelligent phones.
  • Must be proficient in Excel data base functions, formulas and statistics
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge and awareness of topics surrounding HIV/AIDS and preoccupations related to medical care as well as to patients in diverse populations.
  • Ability to communicate openly on sexual topics without prejudice.
  • Ability to work any day of the week including weekends and late evenings is required.
  • Ability work as a team player and under pressure.
  • Must be able to drive to different testing sites.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
