Overview

On behalf of Her Excellency the Governor, Mrs. Jane Owen, the Cayman Islands Judicial and Legal Services Commission invites applications for the position of: GRAND COURT JUDGE - FINANCIAL SERVICES DIVISION.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Grand Court deals with a wide range of criminal and civil matters. It is headed by the Hon. Chief Justice, Margaret Ramsay-Hale, and currently has eight additional puisne judges. The successful applicant will primarily sit as a judge in cases in the Financial Services Division of the Grand Court but may be required by the Hon. Chief Justice to sit in other divisions from time to time, depending upon operational need.
The Financial Services Division of the Grand Court was created in 2009 to meet the need for specialist judges with experience in commercial disputes to case-manage and try complex high-value civil disputes that arise out of the business of the financial services sector in the Cayman Islands. Qualifications, Experience and Skills

Applicants for this position must:-
  • have a minimum of 10 years post-qualification experience in the practice of law and be qualified to practice as an advocate in the courts of the Cayman Islands, the United Kingdom or the Commonwealth;
  • have previous judicial and/or practical experience in the fields of insolvency and commercial disputes, including fiduciary relationships and trusts;
  • possess a sound and thorough knowledge of the common law applicable in the Cayman Islands and the ability to interpret local legislation and case law in making decisions in accordance with the law of the Cayman Islands;
  • possess excellent research, analytical, oral and written skills and proficiency in using commonly available email and word processing software;
  • maintain confidentiality, exercise good judgment and commitment, demonstrate procedural fairness and the ability to deal courteously with professional representatives, litigants in person and members of the public; and
  • show maturity and sound judgment, possess strong communication and listening skills and expertise in time management and be impartial and independent of all outside influences.
The successful applicant will be subject to the Judicial Code of Conduct and will be expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the Bangalore principles.
The successful candidate will receive an appointment to the age of 70. Salary and benefits will be determined in accordance with the Judges Allowances and Emoluments Act (2018 Revision) and any revision thereof.
