A general maintenance technician in the manufacturing industry is responsible for the upkeep and repair of production machinery, electrical systems, waste management and facilities.

A general maintenance technician in the manufacturing industry is responsible for the upkeep and repair of production machinery, electrical systems, waste management and facilities. The duties include:

  1. Ensuring that industrial machinery and equipment run smoothly and reliably.
  2. preventive maintenance, testing, adjusting, repairing, and servicing a wide range of machines and mechanical systems.
  3. performing diagnostic tests to detect malfunctions, inspecting machines periodically for any signs of wear and tear, and conducting regular maintenance tasks such as lubrication, cleaning, and adjustments to ensure optimal performance.
  4. Provide input on machinery purchases and ensure that new equipment is installed and calibrated correctly.
  5. Carry out maintenance, repair, and replacement of parts to correct machinery malfunctions
  6. Collaborate with other team members, including production management, Plant Engineer, Machine operator, forklift operators, and other team members, to solve complex problems and improve processes
  7. Coordinate, schedule, manage and document all repairs done by external contractors, such as Plumbers, Electricians, Machinist, Welders and other external contractors performing repairs on machinery, equipment, facilities and the building.
  8. Respond to breakdowns and call-outs in a timely manner
  9. Maintain logs and records of all maintenance and repair work done
  10. Enforce and adhere to safety and environmental regulations at all times
  11. Any other related duties that may be required from time to time
  1. Implement preventive maintenance plans to avoid unexpected breakdowns
  2. Test and adjust control panels and components, and verify equipment functionality
  3. Comply with safety and environmental rules and regulations in all maintenance procedures
  4. Assist with the maintenance and servicing schedule for wastewater treatment system, production water treatment, chiller system, Ac units and Lab equipment
  5. Assist machine operators and technicians with the operating, pull-down and fit up of machines and equipment during operation and repairs, such as basket mills, HSDs, and forklifts.
  6. Document all maintenance and repair work performed, including the cause of machine failure, and the specific parts or equipment use.
  1. Keep an inventory of spare parts in stock and place orders when necessary.

 

Areas of Focus for the GMT:

  1. Minor Troubleshooting/repairs involving Plumbing, Electrical, Forklift and general factory maintenance
  2. Minor Troubleshooting/repairs involving HSD and other Mixers - Guided by Plant Engineer
  3. Take parts to machine shop for repairs or coordinate and follow-up, source and purchase minor parts to fix machinery and to address other minor maintenance issues.
  4. Ensure we have all relevant spare parts, especially for the HSDs and Basket mills
  5. Oversee the efficient operation and functioning of both sand-baskets.
  6. Develop a maintenance program for all areas of the factory operations, facilities and the building
  7. Ensure proper start-up and shutdown of the factory
  8. Weekly and Monthly Maintenance Reports with servicing and repairs activities
  9. Safety and maintenance alerts
  10. Ensure maintenance and servicing Logs are kept up to date.
  11. Observe and Inspect all Machinery and Equipment weekly for optimum operations and performance
  12. Ensure proper use & care of Equipment and Machinery

 

Qualifications Required:

  • Education: High school diploma (CXC/CSEC with Math/English preferred); trade certification (e.g., HEART/NSTA Certification or other certification).
  • Experience: 3-5 years in general maintenance, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical repairs, and preventive upkeep of machinery.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in maintenance and repairs and safety protocols. Additional technical training or a degree in a related field is an asset.
  • The GMT must Have an appreciation for and strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems and is comfortable working with a variety of tools and equipment to solve machinery, plumbing, electrical, and general maintenance issues.

 

Key Abilities

Physical fitness for lifting, standing, and working in varied conditions; valid driver's license; problem-solving, teamwork and communication for reporting issues.

 

Work Environment: This position is located on the factory floor and may involve exposure to loud noise and machinery. Protective clothing and equipment are provided and must be worn.

 

General Skills required:

  1. Understanding of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
  2. Problem-solving skills to quickly identify and resolve issues leading to machine breakdowns and interruptions in production
  3. Physical strength and dexterity required to handle various machinery parts and tools
  4. Attention to detail and strong observational abilities to detect irregularities in the functioning of machinery
  5. Safety awareness to ensure all maintenance tasks are completed in line with safety guidelines and standards
  6. Teamwork skills to effectively collaborate with other technicians and production staff
  7. Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service
  8. Good communication skills to report on the status of maintenance and repair work, as well as to pass on important information about machinery operations to production staff
  9. Experience from previous roles such as Machine Operator, Maintenance Helper, or Industrial Mechanic is advantageous
