Job Description

JOB TITLE:  Field Technician/Engineer

DEPARTMENT:           Operations           

REPORTS TO: Customer/Site Dispatch Spvsr.  

ACCOUNTABLE TO:  Service Delivery Manager

Job Purpose:

The Field Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of network and fibre optic infrastructure. He/she works in a responsible and respectful manner in ensuring reliable connectivity and quality service delivery.

Significance of Role:

In this role, significant emphasis is placed on being highly responsive in completing daily assignments. The contractor is required to work closely with the customer and the Site/Customer Dispatch Supervisor and Project Manager. He/she executes assigned tasks in a responsible manner ensuring that he protects the interests of the client at all times without compromising his safety or the safety of others. The Contractor will usually be dispatched to all areas of Jamaica.

Key Responsibilities:

The Contractor will be analyzing, evaluating, and resolving any problems involving the power equipment and site's component systems. Which includes but is not limited to, cat 5 cables, Poe adaptors, Fiber installation, Wireless radios, Switches, Routers, and Solar Systems.

  • Troubleshooting wireless radios issues and interpreting results to make effective recommendations.

  • light debushing when needed

  • Conducts light electrical repair and installation when needed

  • Writes up daily reports and posts them in Slack, obserbs and complies with the company safety regulations, and preventative maintenance plans.

  • Repairs or replaces faulty site/customer equipment.

  • Keeps abreast of advancements in your field and attending workshops as required

  • Communicates all field related issues to your Field Supervisor immediately , and resolve immediately where possible , where a revisit is needed , the details as to why  and what is needed to resolve the issue completely should be documented in your report

  • Makes appropriate recommendations and briefing on repairs, diagnostics and equipment specifications

  • Building positive relationships with customers and distributing Client brochures/flyers into areas of interest when the Client finds it feasible for such to occur.

  • Diagnoses errors or technical problems and determining proper solutions

  • Makes appropriate recommendations and briefing on repairs, diagnostics, and equipment specifications.

  • Operates vehicles and machinery in a safe manner

  • Troubleshootes testing, repairing and servicing technical equipment

  • Responds promptly to all dispatch request assigned with an ETA

  • Troubleshoots all site power system, which includes standard Ups, Various types of batteries, Solar System.

  • Installs site Enclosure at Sites to House site equipment’s and batteries.

  • Climbs towers at various heights using climbing harnesses to install wireless radio antennas and remove similar equipment from towers when instructed to do so. 

  • Ensures all reports must have detailed information and pictures of the Job Completed so it can be cleared as to what was done.

  • Completes site survey properly when called upon to do so and provide all the details and pictures to compliment the notes provided.

  • Creates voice and data networks through the installation, running, terminating, and operation of telecommunications hardware, including routers, switches, multiplexors, Catalyst, and PTP Site Link. 

  • Installs radio and necessary hardware at customer locations configure radios and switches.

  • The Contractor MUST complete daily online updates (if applicable) to ticket notes each evening outlining activities and results of such day.

  • Contacts relevant customers, sales manager, operations manager, field manager or anyone else involved with the process of installation or removal of equipment when your daily schedule is altered or changed.

  • The Contractor MUST communicate effectively with the Network Operations Center (NOC) prior to any removal or installation of any equipment on any Client repeater site or tower location comprising the Client’s network.

  • Drives in assigned territory to troubleshoot, install, or remove client equipment

  • The Contractor is NOT to leave any repeater site or tower site without obtaining confirmation from the NOC center that all is working well at site.

  • The Contractor is to contact the field manager immediately when you remain at any one customer/tower location beyond two hours so that the field manager has the option to divert you to an alternate location or have you stay at such location.

  • Drives Bucket trucks if driving qualifications are met.

  • Configure and troubleshoot solar charge controllers.

  • Install and remove solar systems.

  • Recharge site batteries.

  • Drilling holes in the wall to run cables.

  • Reading and navigating from a GPS device.

  • Install small and large antennas on towers and customer rooftops.

  • Respond to Slack requests and provide ETA to destinations as needed to the customer service team.

  • Request appointments to be made by customer service with specified timeslot suggested.

  • Manage fuel usage of vehicle and generator separately with separate cards.

  • Maintain proper functionality of provided generator.

  • Seal holes to prevent any leaks in tower equipment rooms or customer locations.

  • Ensure proper grounding of lightning arrestors is completed when installing new / replacement radios on tower.

  • Ensure/confirm correct equipment is taken to sites or customers from inventory before leaving main inventory location.

  • Install light post brackets on light posts and install fiber optic cables on light posts and underground as needed.

  • Install all required fiber optic cable accessories as needed to complete fiber cable runs.

  • Understand and complete the Fiber optic splicing procedure.

  • And any other duties assigned. 

The Contractor must:

  1. Participate in 30 - 90 day in-office and field training to glean and/or enhance competences in the installation, maintenance and repair of telecom and related equipment and infrastructure.

  2. Observes and complies with all vehicle assignment protocols

  3. Receives and sends daily schedule/productivity reports via online communication messaging system and respond timely to all instant messages sent to you daily.

  4. Utilize the AWD calling over data service for all calls to/from your provided mobile phone.

  5. Request calling credit via the messaging system as needed to contact your team members, customers, and the office.

  6. Responsible for your Client provided vehicle when/if assigned

  7. Enforce safety protocol at all times

  8. Have available all tools as per the below schedule at all times.

  9. Be reachable always or return calls within 10 minutes of receiving.

  10. Be able to remove any kind of device.

  11. Complies with all scheduling, ticketing and billing procedures documentations in a timely and approved manner.

  12. Engages customers professionally before starting jobs at customer explaining what we are going to be doing clearly.

  13. Take special care when migrating site from Jamaica Public Service (JPS) to battery and vice versa.

  14. Gets approval for all site changes in advance by Network Operation Centre in support channel before and after work is to be done.

  15. Complies with all vehicle assignment protocols

  16. Is appropritely equipped and attired to execute job with proper regard to public safety and his safety.

  17. Communicates effectively with both internal and external clients

Working condition
  1. The contractor will generally avail him/herself for a 6-day work week.

  2. The Contractor requires physical dexterity as he/she will be climbing radio towers to install, repair, or remove radio equipment 

  3. Operates in raining conditions inside/outside the site equipment rooms and customer locations with rain suit as needed.
