About the Role:
Barefoot Land Co. is seeking an experienced and independent Controller to run the finance engine: close cadence, entity/property reporting, expense allocation, treasury controls, and high-trust coordination with our external CPA firm.
We do have expert accountants/CPAs. This role is not “bookkeeper-only.” It’s the leader who ensures the numbers are correct, the process is tight, and leadership/investors get clean reporting on time.
You will also oversee bill pay/AP execution (via an assistant/AP specialist) and ensure that payments align with budgets, approvals, and cash forecasts.
Autonomy: No micromanagement. You own the cadence and the standards.
Impact: You’re not a cog in the wheel. You will directly improve decision-making and investor confidence.
Flexibility: Work from anywhere-with occasional travel if needed.
Growth: Performance is rewarded with bonus potential and long-term incentives.
Key Responsibilities:
Own the monthly close process across multiple entities and properties- driving timelines, accuracy, and clean deliverables (in partnership with our CPA firm)
Build and deliver a monthly reporting pack (by entity + by property/project):
budget vs. actual
cash position
forecast updates
variance explanations (what changed and why)
Maintain a 13-week cash forecast plus a rolling 12-month view; flag crunch points early and recommend actions
Oversee AP / bill pay operations (through an assistant/AP specialist):
invoice intake, coding, documentation, payment runs
ensure approvals and controls are followed
Implement and enforce internal controls:
approval thresholds
dual-approval payment releases
new vendor + bank detail verification
documentation standards
Manage intercompany allocations/transfers, entity-level summaries, and consistent coding standards
Produce investor-ready financial summaries and support investor reporting (numbers + clear narrative support)
Support underwriting with actuals, budget inputs, and standardized assumptions (you don’t have to “raise capital,” but you must keep the numbers decision-grade)
Continuously improve processes and tools so finance is repeatable, auditable, and not dependent on one person
Maintain close working visibility with the CEO, providing timely financial insights and recommendations. Proactively identify and lead initiatives to reduce unnecessary costs and improve overall financial efficiency.
Required Skills & Experience:
5+ years in Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accounting/FP&A leadership (multi-entity environment)
Proven success owning monthly close, management reporting, and internal controls
Strong competency in spreadsheets and modern accounting systems (QuickBooks/Xero/NetSuite or similar)
High attention to detail, strong judgment, and a proactive communication style
Ability to operate independently in a remote environment and drive deadlines across stakeholders
Comfortable managing/leading an AP support person and holding standards
Bonus Skills:
Real estate, development, construction accounting, or project-based finance experience
Multi-country or multi-currency experience (Canada exposure a plus)
CPA/CA/ACCA (or equivalent) preferred but not required if experience is strong
Experience implementing AP controls/tools (Bill.com/Melio/Ramp/Brex or equivalents)
Compensation & Benefits:
Competitive base salary based on experience and ability to own multi-entity close, reporting, and cash controls
Performance-based bonus structure tied to on-time closes, reporting accuracy, forecast reliability, and controls compliance
Paid Time Off: Competitive PTO and recognized holidays
Remote Work: Fully remote role with flexibility and support for a productive home office
Professional Growth: Ongoing learning and development opportunities as the company scales
Long-Term Upside: Potential for expanded responsibility and long-term incentives for high performers
