The Port Authority of Jamaica wishes to recruit a FACILITIES MAINTENANCE OFFICER in the Harbours Department.

SALARY SCALE: $2,490,804.87 - $2,935,412.12 per annum.

JOB SUMMARY:

The position is responsible for operating, monitoring and maintaining the lighthouse navigation lights so that mariners are effectively guided in all weather conditions. This position is also responsible for the maintenance of the cottage, where a cottage is on the premises, and all the mechanical and other equipment at the facility. The scope of responsibilities includes maintaining the lighthouse property (and cottage, where present) to ensure that it looks attractive and is in safe and operational condition, and supports the preventative maintenance programs and procedures for the structures and facilities.

 QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Vocational/Technical school level education at or equivalent to HEART/VDTI Level III PLUS
  • Three years’ experience in general building maintenance.
  • Experience in solar power operations and radio/telephone communication is an asset.

 SPECIAL CONDITIONS WITH JOB:

  • Some isolation from residential and commercial areas.
  • Incumbent is required to live on the property.
  • Incumbent must be present on location during the nights.
  • Incumbent is required to work any five of the seven days.
  • Potential for some difficulty in transportation.
  • Incumbent may be rotated to other facilities across the island.

 DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Carry out those duties required to ensure the lighthouse is operable at all times, including:

-      Ensuring all machinery and batteries are in operable condition.

-      Requesting stores items including fuel, oil and bulbs for use on equipment and lighthouse.

-      Keeps frequent observation of lighthouse tower light, particularly at nights, to ensure that timing is maintained for light to come on and go off.

  • Inspect the facility and perform daily maintenance tasks (housekeeping, gardening/lawn care).
  • Perform repairs on damaged or worn-out items, including plumbing systems, electrical components, and carpentry structures.
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Carry out routine and non-routine maintenance projects or activities as directed.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements to facilities.
  • Conduct weekly inspection of the premises and infrastructure to identify potential hazards so that these can be rectified before deterioration causes greater damage.
  • Maintain inventory of the assets of the facilities.
  • Maintain appropriate records and reports.
  • Report any incidents or unusual occurrences on the premises promptly to the Department.
  • Any other duties assigned.
