Environment, Health & Safety Manager

ENVRONMENT, HEALTH & SAFETY MANAGER

 

Main Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

The selected candidate will:

  • Develop, implement, manage and maintain the Company’s EHS strategies, systems, policies, and programmes to enhance positive safety behaviours and drive continuous improvement in safety performance. 
  • Lead the Company’s compliance with regulatory safety and environment requirements, internal policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies regarding statutory and reporting requirements relating to occupational health, safety and environment legislation. 
  • Manage the permit application and renewal process to ensure that all environmental permits/licenses are appropriate and current; reporting is done timely and accurately. Review and maintain all environmental permits, files and documents.
  • Identify and assess the potential impact of regulatory or legislative changes, internal business need or process change on current safety and environment programmes and procedures and advise on viable ways to address, complement, minimize or reduce those impacts.
  • Develop and monitor Key Performance Indicators, goals, targets and metrics to ensure these are aligned to the strategic priorities and objectives of the Company and deliver sustainable EHS performance. in accordance with regulatory requirements, industry standards and best practices.
  • Establish and implement audit inspection programmes and conduct risk assessment to ensure all safety, security, occupational health and environmental rules, regulations and programmes are complied with; potential hazards, risks/vulnerabilities and areas for improvement are identified and evaluated; suitable recommendations/strategies are devised to minimize gaps; mitigate risk of injury, harm or damage to person, equipment or property.
  • Develop, revise, recommend and implement EHS policies and procedures.
  • Conduct investigations, field inspections and research.
  • Work collaboratively with all levels of the organization on safety matters; provide technical expertise, advice and counsel to senior management in support of management decision making; maintain close liaison with supervisory and cross-functional teams to increase employee awareness and stakeholder participation in the safety process.
  • Prepare reports, trend analysis and presentations on EHS metrics/performance.
  • Interpret data and make recommendations to address.
  • Maintain liaison with community and other stakeholder groups.
  • Develop and manage department budget in accordance with strategic and operational plans of the Company.
  • ·       Maintain the facility’s Emergency Response and Disaster Preparedness Plans.

 

Required Competencies - Success in this role will require:

  • In-depth working knowledge of Jamaican Health & Safety, environmental and mining regulations. Knowledge of OSHA regulations would be an asset.
  • An understanding of the bauxite industry, key safety and environmental risks and hazards and ways to mitigate these.
  • Experience in implementing local safety and environment regulations, requirements and standards.
  • Working knowledge of engineering standards, in particular, statutory and mandatory tests and inspection requirements.
  • Strong analytical skills combined with creative and innovative problem-solving skills, attention to detail.
  • Competence in using quantitative and qualitative tools for system analysis; trending and analyzing Health and Safety information.
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work effectively with others, to build relationships; to engender trust and confidence of stakeholders.
  • Ability to multitask - manage deadlines and work effectively on multiple projects with minimum supervision.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer-based office applications – Microsoft Office Suite - ability to create presentations, charts, graphs and spreadsheets.

  

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering discipline or Occupational Health & Safety.  Post graduate qualification in a related area is advantageous. Certified Health & Safety Professional.
  • Eight (8) years of experience in industrial plant with at least five years of experience in a supervisory position.
