EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN-PARAMEDIC
KEY FUNCTIONS
The Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic provides advanced emergency medical care and life support to persons in need. The role requires rapid response to emergency situations, providing immediate care on site, and ensuring safe transportation and continued care in-transit to health facilities within the Department of Health Services care system. The EMT-Paramedic provides stabilizing medical care services using Basic Life support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and advises health care professionals on the current medical status of in-transit patients. It may involve administering medications, and performing life-saving procedures as per the existing protocols and guidelines. The position operates under general guidance and direction of the Coordinator of Emergency Medical Services and the Accident and Emergency Doctor on duty who provides remote medical direction
KEY DUTIES (A Few)
- Respond quickly to emergency calls and assess the situation.
- Assess patients including general condition, taking and recording of vital signs and appropriate history. Monitor and record vital signs during transport to the medical facility.
- Administer all necessary Basic Life Support (BLS), Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Advance Life Support (ALS), Advance Cardiac Life Support(ACLS), Paediatric Advance Life Support(PALS) and Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), procedures to patients as required post assessment.
- Administration of oxygen via nasal cannula or masks.
- Administration of medications such as aspirin for suspected cardiac chest pain, IV fluids, and other advanced medical procedures as per physician’s protocol
- Administration of medications on the list approved by The Department of Health Services. Medications may be administered via intravenous, intraosseous, intranasal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, oral, sublingual, or rectal routes.
- Placement of oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways.
- Use of bag-valve masks.
- Using mouth to mask devices with or without supplemental oxygen.
- Opening and maintaining a patient airway using simple manoeuvres, intubation,
- Suctioning patients in need.
- Providing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation as needed.
- Participate in ongoing training to maintain certification and enhance skills
- Attend regular drills, simulations and continuing education sessions.
- Provide training and mentorship to less experienced EMTs as required.
- Work closely with other emergency responders, including police, fire department and medical staff.
- Communicate effectively with team members to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
- Engage with the community during non-emergency situations to educate the public on safety and emergency preparedness.
- Perform all other relevant duties as specified in the most recent edition of the AEMS protocols.
- Capillary puncture to monitor blood glucose, using a glucometer.
- Lifting and moving patients.
- Transporting patients using the ambulance from between medical facilities, or to their homes, care homes, air and sea ports.
- Mass casualty incident management including triaging.
- Adult intravenous cannulation (IV).
- External cardiac pacing.
- Perform needle decompression of a tension pneumothorax.
- Administering medications and the maintenance of IV drips for inter-hospital and other patient transfers as specified in the most recent edition of the AEMS protocols.
- Complete detailed patient care reports for each patient treated, documenting all care provided, including medications administered, procedures performed and patient responses.

Minimum Acceptable Academic/Technical/Professional Qualifications
Four O levels and an EMT-Paramedic Certification or Degree from a recognised institution.
Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
Minimum Number of Years of Relevant Experience
Two (2) years’ experience in a similar environment.
Specific Skills/Experience and/or Knowledge
Knowledge of Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) practices and procedures.
