Dietitian 

Job Function

The Dietitian/Nutritionist is responsible for

  • Providing specialized dietary care and guidance to patients to promote health and well-being.
  • Assessing patients' nutritional needs, developing personalized meal plans, monitoring their progress, and educating them on healthy eating habits.
  • The Dietitian (Hospital) works closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure that patients receive appropriate nutrition therapy during their hospital stay.

 A. KEY DUTIES

  • Assess patients' nutritional needs by evaluating their medical history, current health condition, and dietary requirements.
  • Develop personalized meal plans based on patient's specific needs, taking into account any dietary restrictions or medical conditions.
  • Educate patients and their families on proper nutrition and the importance of a healthy diet to aid in their recovery or manage their condition.
  • Monitor patients' progress and adjust their meal plans as necessary, collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Provide guidance and support to patients with special dietary needs, such as those with diabetes, food allergies, or gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Document patients' nutritional assessments, interventions, and progress in their medical records to ensure accurate and comprehensive patient care.
  • Stay updated on the latest research and advancements in the field of nutrition, incorporating evidence-based practices into patient care.
  • Collaborate with kitchen staff and food service providers to ensure that meals meet patients' dietary requirements and preferences.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to contribute expertise and provide input on patients' nutritional needs and treatment plans.
  • Conduct nutrition-related workshops, seminars, and educational programs for healthcare professionals, patients, and the community.

EXPECTATIONS

  • In-depth knowledge of nutrition principles, dietary guidelines, and therapeutic diets for various health conditions.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with patients, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent counselling and motivational skills to educate and inspire patients to make positive dietary changes.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret medical records, lab results, and other diagnostic information to determine appropriate nutritional interventions.
  • Proficiency in, or (open to) in using nutrition software and tools to assess dietary intake and create meal plans.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records and manage multiple patient cases simultaneously.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic hospital environment.
  • Empathy and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of patients from diverse backgrounds and age groups.
  • Collaboration skills to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Continuous learning mindset to stay updated with the latest research     and advancements in the field of nutrition.
  • Continuing education and professional development in the field of nutrition.
  • Plan menus which are acceptable to the hospital patients and which are in accordance with dietetic standards, cultural diversity and available funds.
  • Attend and participates in meetings, workshops and conferences.
  • Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of others, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and hospital personnel.

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or a related field.
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) certification from an accredited institution; and or licensure or certification as required by the relevant regulatory body (as applicable). Additional training in the application of modern management techniques
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Dietitian, preferably in a hospital or clinical setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and familiarity with hospital protocols and procedures.
  • Valid Food Handlers Permit
