The Department of Health Services invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for the position of Dental Surgeon
Mandate
To provide preventive and corrective dental care, treatment and/or surgery for the community so as to facilitate the achievement of established oral and dental health standards.
Key Functions
- To provide dental care mainly adults and referred children as appropriate.
- To provide dental care for children with special needs.
- To manage the dental surgery.
- To maintain effective liaison with dental professionals and health promotion officials.
Key Duties
- Provide dental care for adults so as to ensure the establishment of appropriate dental health standards.
- Examine patients for dental and jaw diagnosis.
- Develop comprehensive, individualized and detailed treatment plans for patients.
- Administer anesthesia.
- Perform general dental procedures, e.g. fillings.
- Perform tooth extractions; simple and surgical.
- Perform surgical procedures on teeth, bone and soft tissue.
- Educate patients on after-care and answer questions.
- Perform and complete root canals.
- Diagnose and treat oral disease.
- Provide specialized dental care for the children referred by the Dental Therapist.
- Manage the dental surgery to ensure that services are provided safely, efficiently and in accordance with established professional standards/specifications.
- Liaise with dental professionals and health care officials to promote effective oral and dental health awareness, practices and behaviors.
- Provide technical advice, guidance and direction for the team members to ensure that work targets are achieved.
- Provide cover for dental emergencies.
- Prepare operational and informational reports on dental operations as required.
- Maintain appropriate dental records and related correspondence.
- Perform dental laboratory work in preliminary stages of denture construction.
- Perform other related duties as required by the job function.
Scope of Job
The job carries responsibility for the diagnosis, treatment, care and correction of dental and oral conditions, ailments and diseases, as well as the promotion of appropriatedental health care standards..
Qualification
The incumbent must possess sound knowledge of operations, practices, procedures, standards, specifications and work methods, interpersonal communication, computer skills, communicative, analytical and diagnostic ability and interpretative judgment.
Such knowledge, skills and abilities are normally obtained through the acquisition of a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree. Applicant should have three (3) years post qualification experience in a similar or related job.
