The Delivery Truck Driver is responsible for the safe, timely, and accurate delivery of goods to customers and company locations using assigned vehicles. The role includes the shuttling of goods, repositioning of vehicles, and internal vehicle movements as required to support operational needs.
The Delivery Driver ensures adherence to planned routes, delivery schedules, and company procedures, while maintaining proper care of assigned vehicles, strict cold chain standards, accurate delivery documentation, and high standards of customer service. All duties are performed in compliance with product quality and food safety requirements, road traffic regulations, company policies, and operational standards, while safeguarding company assets and professionally always representing the organization.
Pre-Delivery
- Deliver goods to customers on designated routes by first reviewing allocations and DSD downloads for any special instructions or order-specific information and executing deliveries in accordance with those instructions. Use prescribed routing software to accomplish the most efficient delivery routes whilst ensuring all instructions are executed.
- Conduct pre-delivery inspection of the truck with assigned security personnel, also noting the temperature of the truck before leaving the compound.
- Daily reporting and inputting of metrics into data capture system
En-route
- Prompt delivery is achieved by smart routing and scheduling and not by speeding and reckless driving.
- Maintaining regular communication with route dispatchers and sales reps.
Delivery
- On arrival at the customer’s location, drivers are to park in the designated delivery area. Drivers are to pre-check allocation/DSD and verify the quantity and variety of products to be delivered to customers.
- Monitor and record temperatures as required
- Drivers are to be courteous to customers during the transaction.
- Review deliveries with recipients to ensure they are accurate, noting that you are required to account to the company for all goods, and other company property entrusted to you.
- Drivers are required to accurately complete the invoicing process using the assigned tool or manually if required.
- Follow planned delivery routes and optimize time and fuel efficiency
Post Delivery
- On completion of delivery, and there are products to be returned to the Warehouse, these Returns are to be neatly packed by product and the company’s established Returns procedure followed.
- Drivers are to balance their daily sales - checking cash sales and credit invoices against goods delivered via an allocation and DSD end of day report.
- Shortages and overages must be reported daily.
- Cleaning and servicing the van/truck for the next delivery.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, Experience
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in the delivery of goods
- Knowledge of the FMCG industry
- A valid open general driver’s license
- Minimum 5 years driving experience.
- Extensive knowledge of the operating area
- Physical strength and ability
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Good verbal communication
- Proficiency using a GPS device if required
- Training in Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
