Customs Broker (Grade 1)

Prepare customs documentation and ensure that shipments meet all applicable laws to facilitate the import and export of goods. Determine and track duties and taxes payable and process payments on behalf of client. Coordinate transportation and storage of imported goods.

JOB SUMMARY

Prepare customs documentation and ensure that shipments meet all applicable laws to facilitate the import and export of goods. Determine and track duties and taxes payable and process payments on behalf of client. Coordinate transportation and storage of imported goods.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Classify goods according to tariff coding system.
• Examine product information to ensure compliance with regulations.
• Pay, or arrange for payment of, taxes and duties on shipments.
• Prepare and process import and export documentation according to customs regulations, laws, or procedures.
• Sign documents on behalf of company.
• Clear goods through customs.
• Calculate duty and tariff payments owed on shipments.
• Stay abreast of changes in import or export laws or regulations by reading current literature, attending meetings or conferences, or conferring with colleagues.
• Request or compile necessary import documentation, such as customs invoices, certificates of origin, and cargo-control documents.
• Advise on import and export restrictions, tariff systems, insurance requirements, quotas, or other customs-related matters.
• Monitor, track  or trace the location of goods.
• Consult with officials in various agencies to facilitate clearance of goods through customs.
• Quote duty and tax rates on goods to be imported.
• Obtain line releases from shippers.
• Arrange for transportation and product distribution of imported products.
• Negotiate with freight forwarders for destination services. Also negotiate with various shipping companies for best possible rates.
• Maintain relationships with customs brokers, customs and all customs related agencies such as the Valuation branch and the Bureau of Standards.
• Apply for tariff concessions or for duty drawbacks and other refunds.
• Provide advice on transportation options, types of carriers, or shipping routes.
• Collect Bank Drafts.
• Provide duty and tax amounts for costing purposes.
• Collect Invoice, Bill of Laden and Packing Lists within ten days.
• Present to customs for examination, all overtime containers that the incumbent is responsible for.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Must have a reliable vehicle.
• Must hold or be eligible for a valid Customs Broker’s Licence in accordance with the Customs Brokers and Customs Clerks Act, Chap. 78:03.
• Minimum age: 21 years.
• CXC / GCE O’Level passes including English Language (additional subjects such as Mathematics or Principles of Business would be an asset).
• Demonstrated knowledge of customs laws, tariffs, import/export documentation, and procedures.
• Ability to prepare, submit and process customs entries using ASYCUDA World.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Must be of good character, reliable, and capable of meeting the bond/surety requirements under the Act.
• Previous experience in customs brokerage, freight forwarding, or logistics would be an asset (not mandatory at Grade 1).
