The Government of Montserrat is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons for the post of COURT REPORTER, within the Supreme Court Services.

JOB PURPOSE

To provide transcription services in an efficient, timely, accurate and professional manner on behalf of the Supreme Court Department to all Court users; namely the Public and Private Bar and Members of the Public.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare accurate transcripts of the proceedings in the format directed by the Court.
  • Maintain a daily log of court proceedings.
  • Timely distribution of the official transcript of the Court and other interested parties.
  • Careful maintenance of files and records, maintaining backups and Note File Management Systems.
  • Accurate real time captioning of the record in the court rooms that are equipped with computer monitors.
  • Assists in billing of transcripts.
  • Provide assistance to users to obtain specific references from the record.
  • Perform any other related duties, which may be assigned from time to time.

 

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Sound knowledge of standard court reporting rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Sound knowledge of standard court reporting equipment and machine including stenographic machine and CAT software.
  • Excellent knowledge of word processing programmes.
  • Excellent knowledge of the English Language.
  • Familiarity with legal and medical terminology and research.
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to communicate clearly (written and oral).
  • Ability to undertake independent legal search.
  • Ability to deal with customers in a courteous in a courteous and professional manner.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Professional qualification in Court Reporting with a minimum of six (6) years’ experience.

 

EVALUATION METHOD 

Forma evaluations will be done annually the following basis:

  • Ability to keep accurate records and produce exact information in the required format;
  • Ability to meet agreed deadlines;
  • Ability to work extended hours when necessary;
  • Ability to provide assistance to end users;
  • Ability to work unsupervised and with a high level of confidentiality;
  • Ability to conduct legal research and document the same;
  • Ability to deal with customers in a courteous and professional manner;
  • Punctuality and attendance.

 

SALARY AND GRADE

The salary attached to the position is in the scale R28-R22 – that is, EC$43,008.00 to EC$52,500.00 per annum (Taxable).

 

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

Appointment will be on a Contractual Basis for a period of three (3) years in the first instance,  with the option to renew for a further period of two (2) years.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Court Reporter reports directly to the Registrar, Supreme Court, along with the Court Administrator who is responsible for administrative matters.
