Consultant -Anesthesiologist The Consultant Anesthesiologist will be responsible for the administration of anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical and medical procedures.

Job Summary:     The Consultant Anesthesiologist will be responsible for the administration of anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical and medical procedures. The Consultant’s role includes preoperative assessment, intraoperative management, and postoperative care, ensuring patient safety and comfort. The Consultant will lead and mentor junior anesthesia staff, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and engage in strategic planning for the department. This position requires a dedication to continuous professional development and a focus on patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care:

  • Provide anesthesia care for a wide range of surgical procedures, including general, regional, and local anesthesia.
  • Conduct comprehensive preoperative evaluations, including medical history, physical examinations, and risk assessments, to develop individualized anesthesia plans.
  • Monitor and manage patients' vital signs and anesthesia depth during surgery, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Oversee postoperative recovery, including pain management, monitoring for complications, and ensuring smooth transitions to post-anesthesia care units (PACU).
  • Provide detailed consultations, discussing anesthesia options, risks, and benefits with patients and their families.
  • Work closely with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive perioperative care.

Leadership and Supervision:

  • Lead and manage a team of anesthetists, junior doctors, nurses, and support staff, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.
  • Provide mentorship, training, and support to junior anesthesia staff, enhancing their clinical skills and professional development.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, offering constructive feedback and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Address and resolve conflicts within the team, maintaining a positive and professional work environment.
  • Organize and participate in teaching sessions, surgical workshops, and clinical training programs.
  • Promote the well-being of staff, encouraging work-life balance and providing support during high-stress situations.

Operational Management:

  • Develop, implement, and review clinical protocols and guidelines to ensure evidence-based practices and high standards of care.
  • Oversee the allocation and utilization of resources, including staffing, equipment, and supplies, to meet the needs of the department.
  • Analyze and improve workflows and processes within the department to enhance efficiency and patient care.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation and management of the departmental budget, ensuring efficient use of financial resources.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and development initiatives to enhance the services and capabilities of the surgical department.

Quality Improvement:

  • Lead and participate in clinical audits to evaluate and improve the quality of care provided in the department.
  • Engage in clinical research projects to advance knowledge and improve practices in surgery.
  • Analyze clinical data to identify trends, outcomes, and areas for improvement.
  • Implement evidence-based practices and stay current with advancements in surgical techniques and technologies
  • Promote a culture of patient safety, reporting and addressing incidents and near-misses promptly.
  • Drive continuous quality improvement initiatives, involving staff in identifying and implementing changes.

Communication:

  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families, providing clear explanations of diagnoses, treatment options, and care plans.
  • Facilitate clear and effective communication between the Anesthesiology department and other hospital departments.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough medical records, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead and participate in departmental meetings, case conferences, and handover sessions.
  • Represent the Anesthesiology department in hospital-wide committees and external forums.
  • Establish and maintain mechanisms for receiving and addressing feedback from patients and staff.

Patient Management:

  • Take a leadership role in coordinating the care of patients under your supervision, ensuring that care plans are implemented effectively, and that communication among healthcare team members is clear, timely, and accurate.
  • Foster therapeutic relationships with patients and their families through effective communication, active listening, and empathetic understanding of their concerns, values, and preferences.
  • Provide patient-centered care that respects cultural diversity, individual autonomy, and personal dignity, and promotes shared decision-making and informed consent.
  • Educate patients and families about their medical conditions, treatment options, and self-care strategies, empowering them to actively participate in their healthcare journey and achieve optimal health outcomes.
  • Advocate for patients' rights, needs, and preferences within the healthcare system, ensuring that their voices are heard and their interests are represented in care planning and decision-making processes.
  • Participate in the coordination of patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, liaising with other healthcare providers as necessary.

Education and Training:

Supervision and Mentorship:

  • Provides supervision and mentorship to junior Anesthesiology staff, including interns, medical students, and junior residents.
  • Guide Junior house officers in clinical decision-making, teaching procedural skills, and fostering professional development.

Clinical Teaching:

  • Engages in clinical teaching activities, imparting knowledge and skills to junior colleagues through bedside teaching sessions, case discussions, and formal educational sessions.
  •  Promotes a culture of continuous learning and skill acquisition within the Surgical department.

Role Modeling:

  • Demonstrating professionalism, compassion, and evidence-based practice to serve as a positive role model for junior staff, embodying the values and principles of surgical department.

Medical Rounds:

  • Participate in medical rounds with attending physicians, consultants, and medical students to discuss patient cases, review treatment plans, and provide input on patient management strategies.

  • Understand clinical governance principles, quality improvement methodologies, and patient safety initiatives in Anesthesiology Department, with commitment to continuous improvement and adherence to professional standards.

Professional Development:

  • Participate in educational activities, conferences, and continuing medical education (CME) opportunities to enhance clinical knowledge, skills, and competency in anesthesia practice.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in anesthesia through continuous education and professional development.
  • Maintain all necessary certifications and licensure requirements.

Procedural Skills:

  • Administer medications to induce general anesthesia, ensuring rapid and smooth onset.
  • Monitor and adjust anesthetic levels to maintain appropriate depth of anesthesia throughout surgical procedures.
  • Manage the safe emergence from anesthesia, ensuring a smooth transition to wakefulness and recovery.
  • Perform spinal anesthesia by injecting anesthetic agents into the cerebrospinal fluid for surgeries involving the lower abdomen, pelvis, and lower extremities.
  • Administer epidural anesthesia for pain management during labor and delivery or for postoperative pain control.
  • Conduct peripheral nerve blocks to provide regional anesthesia for surgeries on the extremities, reducing the need for general anesthesia and providing postoperative pain relief.
  • Administer medications to provide conscious sedation for minor surgical procedures and diagnostic tests, ensuring patient comfort and cooperation.
  • Manage deep sedation for procedures requiring a higher level of sedation, monitoring for airway patency and respiratory function.
  • Perform endotracheal intubation to secure the airway for patients undergoing general anesthesia or experiencing respiratory failure.
  • Use LMAs as an alternative to endotracheal intubation for airway management during anesthesia.
  • Utilize advanced airway management techniques, such as fiberoptic intubation or video laryngoscopy, for difficult airways.
  • Implement multimodal pain management strategies for acute postoperative pain, including the use of opioids, non-opioid analgesics, and regional anesthesia techniques.
  • Participate in the assessment and management of chronic pain conditions, using interventions such as nerve blocks, epidural injections, and implantable devices.
  • Set up and manage PCA systems to allow patients to self-administer pain relief within prescribed limits.
  • Lead and perform advanced CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) in response to cardiac arrest or other life-threatening emergencies.
  • Recognize and manage anesthesia-related complications such as malignant hyperthermia, anaphylaxis, and local anesthetic systemic toxicity.
  • Provide anesthesia care for trauma patients, often in emergency and uncontrolled environments, ensuring rapid assessment and stabilization.
  • Use invasive and non-invasive techniques to monitor cardiovascular function, including arterial lines, central venous catheters, and pulmonary artery catheters.
  • Monitor respiratory status using capnography, pulse oximetry, and arterial blood gas analysis.
  • Assess and monitor neuromuscular blockade using nerve stimulators to guide the administration of muscle relaxants.
  • Provide effective pain relief during labor using epidural, spinal, or combined spinal-epidural techniques.
  • Administer anesthesia for cesarean sections, ensuring the safety and comfort of both the mother and the baby.
  • Tailor anesthesia techniques to the unique physiological and psychological needs of pediatric patients, ensuring safety and comfort.
  • Provide sedation for diagnostic and minor surgical procedures in pediatric patients, ensuring adequate sedation and minimal distress.

Qualifications:

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized medical school.
  • Registered Medical Practitioner with the St. Lucia Medical & Dental Council to practice in St. Lucia.
  • Successful completion of residency program in anesthesia, with a minimum of 3 years of post-certification experience in Anesthesia practice. 
  • Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is recommended.
  • Demonstrated committment to ongoing professional development, including participation in relevant courses, workshops and conferences.

Working Conditions:

  • Work Location: Hospital-based position in the Anesthesia Department within the Surgical Department.
  • Hours:  20 Hours a week in a 4-hour shift. Consultants may be required to participate in on-call duties as part of their role, responding to Surgical/ Anesthesiology emergencies and providing medical care outside of regular working hours. On-call shifts may vary in duration and frequency, with provisions for compensatory rest and remuneration as per hospital policies and collective agreements.
  • Environment: Anesthesia Department within a hospital setting, dealing with a diverse patient population and a variety of medical conditions.
  • Equipment: Use of medical equipment and technology for patient evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Physical Requirements: Standing, walking, lifting, and performing procedures as required in a clinical setting.
  • Restrictions:
    • Be available as is required when on call. Respond within 5 minutes to all emergencies. Promptly respond to calls with appropriate evaluation and action within 20 minutes.

Salary will be paid in accordance with the experience and requirements for the post. With the terms stipulated by The Board of St. Jude Hospital.
