In humanitarian and emergency contexts, children are among the most vulnerable populations, often exposed to trauma, displacement, violence, and disruption of essential services. These experiences can have long-lasting impacts on their psychosocial well-being and development. Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE) programming therefore requires approaches that are both responsive and sensitive to trauma.

The “Return to Happiness” (RTH) approach is a structured psychosocial support intervention designed to help children recover from distress through safe, supportive, and engaging activities. Integrating trauma-informed principles into child protection programming ensures that interventions are delivered in ways that recognize and respond to the effects of trauma, promoting resilience and recovery.
