Commercial Manager, Europe 2
Main Purpose of Job:
The Commercial Manager will lead Angostura’s commercial expansion across developing and high-growth European markets (e.g., Portugal, Turkey, Moldova, Bulgaria, Armenia), driving revenue growth, profitability, and volume increases through strong distributor partnerships, market penetration strategies, and premium brand positioning. The role requires meticulous management of distributor relationships, compliance with spirits, environmental, and labeling regulations, and the pursuit of new opportunities in emerging and underdeveloped markets, while forging strategic partnerships to strengthen Angostura’s presence and unlock sustainable growth across the region.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Commercial Strategy & Market Development
- Develop and execute commercial strategies to aggressively grow market share in developing and high-potential European spirits markets.
- Identify and secure potential new distribution partners in emerging, underdeveloped, and untapped territories.
- Build and implement market-entry strategies for underdeveloped or high-growth territories, channels, or regions.
- Provide competitor intelligence and consumer insights to guide innovation, brand positioning, and premiumization initiatives.
Distributor & Partner Relationship Management
- Manage distributor relationships, including negotiation of annual distribution contracts, incentives, forecasts, stock management, depletions reporting, and pricing structures.
- Conduct Quarterly Business Review Meetings with key distributors and regular meetings with emerging markets.
- Develop and continually review annual joint business and market plans with distributors, covering volumes, marketing plans, investments, and strategic growth partnerships.
- Ensure performance tracking through quarterly distributor scorecards.
Sales, Forecasting & Financial Performance
- Collaborate with business and financial analysts to manage the quarterly order book, ensuring timely purchase orders and alignment with forecasted volumes.
- Partner with distributors and internal stakeholders to develop revenue- and volume-based budgets by SKU, balancing growth priorities with cash flow and inventory optimization.
- Accurately report on monthly sales and depletions performance, including market wins, challenges, competitor moves, and proposed solutions.
- Work closely with finance to monitor margins, pricing discipline, and profitability improvements across markets.
Marketing, Brand Building & Premiumization
- Drive brand building through localized trade marketing and promotional campaigns tailored to cultural and consumer dynamics in the region.
- Oversee trade marketing activities across premium and standard on-trade and off-trade channels.
- Develop premium brand visibility including but limited to luxury hotels, restaurants, and lighthouse bars.
- Monitor A&P expenditure and ensure budgets are managed in line with approved plans.
- Review and present regional brand and marketing plans bi-annually, ensuring direct alignment with commercial goals.
Compliance, Governance & Policy Adherence
- Ensure compliance with EU and local excise, advertising, and labeling laws.
- Collaborate with quality assurance to ensure all products are delivered in line with market regulations and mandatory standards.
- Establish KPIs and monitor commercial performance against benchmarks, ensuring corrective actions where required.
Supply Chain & Operational Excellence
- Partner with distributors and internal supply chain teams to forecast demand and optimize inventory allocation.
- Monitor stock levels at distributor warehouses and Angostura’s 3PL monthly to ensure continuity of supply.
- Coordinate with logistics teams to secure smooth product availability and minimize disruptions.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, International Trade, or related field.
- Postgraduate diploma or MBA (preferred for managing multi-country markets).
- 5–10 years in FMCG or beverage commercial management.
- Hands-on experience entering new markets and setting up distributor networks.
- Background in premium brands, with proven results in volume and brand building.
- Training in International Trade & Distribution Management or Market Development.
- Exposure to FMCG/spirits commercial frameworks (Diageo/Pernod Ricard-type programs).
- Proven track record of building businesses in fragmented, emerging, or price-sensitive markets.
Required knowledge/skills/abilities:
- Strong negotiation and account management skills. Strong commercial acumen and ability to build long-term distributor partnerships.
- Deep knowledge of European spirits and beverages markets.
- Strong Relationship Building Skills. Excellent stakeholder management (E.g., distributors, retailers, regulators).
- Strong regulatory knowledge and compliance understanding in alcohol trade.
- Analytical skills for revenue, pricing and profit margin optimization.
- Strong Excel skills; familiarity with BI tools (e.g., Power BI) and ERP systems (e.g., SAP).
- Excellent presentation and storytelling skills to convey insights clearly to senior stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional and cross-regional teams.
- Proactive mindset with ability to identify issues and propose solutions.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality outputs under tight deadlines.
- Fluency in English, plus another Eastern European language.
- Problem-solving mindset to overcome infrastructure, supply chain or any other challenges.
- Ability to foresee hurdles and challenges and address them directly with solution-oriented approach.
- Ability to travel to markets for prolonged periods (planned and unplanned)
