To protect the interests of the client group, reduce risk/exposure and support the achievement of targets set for the client group through the provision of professional legal services and legal representation.

To assume responsibility for all legal matters related to the company’s upstream business and activities. Overall responsibility for advising on all legal matters and ensuring that activities related to ethics and anti-corruption are well organized and conducted in a satisfactory manner.

To coordinate at executive levels across the company and provides strategic guidance on regulatory, land use and land management strategies. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Legal:

  • Serves as primary legal advisor to CEO and executive team and provides preventive counselling with respect to the legal risks associated with business practices or potential new business opportunities.
  • Develops response strategy to civil litigation, industrial relations and regulatory inquiries; represent company in all major 3rd party contracts.
  • Negotiates, drafts and implements a variety of complex, multi-party agreements for ventures including M&A, strategic alliances and JVs.
  • Provides broad range of technical advice and legal services to support the client group and comments on legislation and statutory regulatory obligations.
  • Provides legal services, including intellectual property services, regulatory issues, commercial disputes, customs and corporate secretariat activities across the group.
  • Reviews and advises company on implementation of policies and compliance with laws.
  • Works with the HR function to implement policies and practices in keeping with good industrial relations practices.

Land Management:

  • Provides management and strategic leadership for Land Management of company’s E&P and private acreage and maintains strategic, efficient and cost-effective land management services, in furtherance of company’s goals, including titles, rights, leases, acquisitions and divestment.
  • Establishes and maintains internal and external stakeholder relationships including government agencies, internal business units in support of efficient execution of land management activities.   
  • Provides expert and strategic guidance on short and long-term regulatory and land management strategies to support new project development and land acquisition for drilling projects.
  • Ensures effective and compliant land management processes and mechanisms for all companies’ land assets, including fee property, rights of way, royalty and rent payments.

Other:

  • Develops strategic goals, objectives and key performance indicators for Legal and utilizes Performance Management System to measure, manage, and motivate performance.
  • Develops and implements staffing strategy and effectively leads a legal team by developing talent and cultivating a high-performance culture.
  • Directs the development of departmental budgets and monitors and controls utilization. 
  • Undertakes any other assignments required from time to time, to fulfil the job purpose
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
  • LLB and Legal Education Certificate.
Experience
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years’ experience as a practicing Attorney, seven (7) of which must be in senior leadership roles, preferably in the Oil and Gas industry.
  • Experience in Trading and Energy laws.
Job Specific Skills
  • Navigating the landscape of external stakeholders (political, media, etc.).
  • Conflict Management.
