The Department Chair serves as the chief administrative officer of the department with responsibility for creating and maintaining an environment that is centred on the academic welfare of the students enrolled in its programmes, and for encouraging scholarly activities among academic staff.

Essentially, the Chair provides leadership and mentorship to ensure the effective management of the academic, administrative and financial affairs of the department. The Chair is a member of wider institutional committees and may be elected to serve on other college or campus bodies. The Chair has primary responsibility for encouraging consensus on matters of importance to the mission of the department and for articulating this in appropriate fora. The Chair reports directly to the Academic Dean and is responsible for maintaining constructive relationships between his/her department, other stakeholders, and departments with similar academic programmes or common interests throughout the College.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supports the strategic goals of the College through alignment of departmental priorities with strategic imperatives;
  • Directs curriculum development and ensures that all aspects of curriculum review are undertaken and are consistent with the goals of the department and the College;
  • Guides the department's strategic planning process and ensures consistency with the goals of the School and College;
  • Works with faculty to develop and implement plans for teaching, research and student support activities;
  • Encourages and facilitates faculty development and instructional improvement activities;
  • Determines programme needs and recommends learning resources, equipment and other materials for purchase;
  • Establishes and monitors teaching schedules in collaboration with faculty, deans and vice presidents to ensure appropriate faculty assignment;
  • Develops, implements and monitors business systems and processes to ensure efficiency of operations;
  • Prepares and defends budgets, establishes priorities and administers the department's budget in an equitable and trans­ parent manner, consistent with institutional and governing board guidelines and policies;
  • Directs and leads processes and procedures for engaging in action research to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the discipline; and
  • Provides specific guidance in the conduct of action research, including data collection methods, analytic procedures and arriving at conclusions that impact teaching and learning practice.

 Requirements:

  • Master's degree in one of the discipline areas in the department or in Education/Educational Administration.
  • A minimum of five (5) years' service in the capacity of senior faculty, teaching in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of school/class administration.
  • Excellent supervisory, human relations, communication and management skills. 

Compensation:

-      Base Salary: $18,500 - $23,000
-      Transport Allowance: $1,500
-      Communication Allowance: $300
