JOB SUMMARY:

The Biomedical Engineer is a professional who supports and advances patient care by applying engineering and management skills to healthcare technology. The incumbent will be required to have significant knowledge in the underlying physiology, medicine, clinical care of patients, the theory of operation, and the safe clinical application of biomedical equipment in all major areas of clinical equipment.

 

The Biomedical Engineer will also be required to manage personnel, finances, instrumentation and projects to promote the safe and cost- effective application of technology. This must be done in compliance with institutional, regulatory and governmental requirements.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

-       Applies electrical, electronic, mechanical, chemical, optical, and other engineering principles to perform maintenance, service, repairs, and overhaul of all medical equipment and medical systems

 

-       Performs a variety of increasingly complex technical tasks in connection with the installation, maintenance, calibration and repair of biomedical equipment

 

-       Liaises with all internal and external clients to ensure smooth and efficient operations of the department

 

-       Schedules and assigns work to subordinates

 

-       Conducts training sessions for Technicians as part of continuing educational development

 

-       Prepares equipment specifications of all items of equipment to be purchased

 

-       Advises on the Procurement Cycle to ensure compliance with organizational standards

 

-       Audits tools and test equipment inventory in the biomedical workshop

 

-       Performs User Training in the use of new items of biomedical equipment and lends support to the continuing educational thrust of the clinical programme

 

-       Assist in clinical procedures as and when required

 

-       Maintains a Computerised Maintenance Management System

 

-       Maintains records and writes reports on all related maintenance activities

 

-       Adheres to Accreditation Standards, Public Health, Infection Control, Occupational Health and Safety requirements

 

-       Performs other related duties as assigned

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES

-       Monthly Reports

-       Staff Development Plans and Progress Reports

-       Budget Reports

AUTHORITIES

 

-       To ensure compliance with stipulated quality controls and safety guidelines

 

-       To liaise with intra and inter-departmental representatives

 

-       Make modifications to existing systems to improve operations

 

-       Scheduling projects in order of priority

 

SPECIAL REQUIRMENTS

 

-       Willing to work overtime, public holidays and weekends as requested by the General Manager, Biomedical Services

 

-       Staff must avail themselves as far as possible for duty in the event of an emergency or disaster

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

REPORTING

Reports directly to the General Manager, Biomedical Services or duly authorised officer

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

-       Knowledge and experience in specifications preparation, procuring and evaluating hospital clinical equipment

 

-       Knowledge of clinical monitoring, diagnostic, therapeutic and supportive equipment

 

-       Demonstrated ability in the troubleshooting, repairing and providing preventative maintenance on clinical equipment

 

-       Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite word processing software; Microsoft Office Suite spreadsheet software; CMMS; Explorer  internet software; MS Project 2003  project management software and

 

-       Knowledge of current Regulatory and safety requirements

 

-       Ability to formulate and implement organizational procedures in a biomedical workshop

 

-       Ability to complete all assignments in a timely function

 

-       Well developed theoretical and practical knowledge of Biomedical Engineering principles and practices. 

 

 

Certificates and Licenses:

Certification in Supervisory Management would be an asset

Credentials and experience

Bachelor's degree, BSc in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Medical Physics from an accredited college or university

At least two (2) post qualifications years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
