BioMedical Engineer
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Applicants must have:
· Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, electrical engineering, or related field required; master's degree preferred.
· Minimum of five (5) years of progressively more responsible job-related experience in Biomedical Engineering, medical device maintenance, or healthcare technology management, preferably in a hospital or healthcare setting.
· Strong technical knowledge of medical equipment and devices, including troubleshooting techniques, repair procedures, and preventive maintenance protocols.
· Familiarity with regulatory requirements and standards applicable to medical device maintenance and healthcare technology management.
Job Summary: The Biomedical Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and effective operation of medical equipment and devices throughout the hospital. This position requires a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to quality and patient safety. The Biomedical Engineer collaborates with clinical staff, vendors, and other stakeholders to maintain and optimize medical equipment performance and support the delivery of high-quality patient care.
Key Competencies and Responsibilities
Leadership:
· Lead and motivate a team of biomedical technicians, providing guidance, training, and professional development opportunities to foster a high- performing and cohesive work environment.

Equipment Maintenance and Repair:
· Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of medical equipment and devices, including diagnostic imaging systems, patient monitors, infusion pumps, and surgical instruments.
· Conduct preventive maintenance inspections, calibration procedures, and performance testing to ensure equipment reliability, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory standards.
· Manage and evaluate the need for service contracts and their renewals.
· Oversee adherence to equipment warranty requirements and keep track of equipment warranties.
Technical Support and Training:
· Provide technical support and training to clinical staff on the proper use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of medical equipment and devices.
· Collaborate with healthcare professionals to address equipment-related issues, resolve technical problems, and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime and ensure continuity of patient care.
Equipment Evaluation and Procurement:
· Evaluate new medical technologies, equipment upgrades, and product enhancements to assess performance, reliability, and compatibility with existing systems.
· Participate in equipment selection, procurement, and installation processes, conducting technical evaluations, vendor negotiations, and contract reviews to ensure optimal value and functionality.
Project Management and Collaboration:
· Lead or participate in Biomedical Engineering projects, initiatives, and committees aimed at improving equipment performance, workflow efficiency, and patient safety.
· Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including clinical engineers, technicians, nurses, and physicians, to develop and implement solutions to technical challenges and process improvements.
Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance:
· Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and hospital policies governing the use, maintenance, and safety of medical equipment and devices.
· Maintain accurate documentation of equipment inventory, maintenance records, service contracts, warranties, and regulatory certifications to support regulatory audits and accreditation surveys.
· Problem-Solving and Abilities: Biomedical Engineers should possess strong problem-solving skills to diagnose complex technical issues, troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, and implement effective solutions. They must be able to analyze data, evaluate alternative approaches, and make informed decisions to ensure the reliable performance of medical devices and the delivery of high-quality patient care.
· Communication Skills: Effective communication skills are essential for Biomedical Engineers to interact with clinical staff, vendors, and other stakeholders. They must be able to convey technical information clearly and concisely, collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, and provide training and support to non-technical personnel on the use and maintenance of medical equipment.
· Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills are important for Biomedical Engineers to build positive relationships with colleagues, collaborate on projects, and foster a culture of teamwork and collaboration. They must be able to listen actively to feedback, resolve conflicts constructively, and cultivate a supportive and inclusive work environment that values diversity and teamwork.
Salary will be paid in accordance with the experience and requirements of the post with the terms stipulated by The Board of St. Jude Hospital.
