Bio-Medical Engineer

Summary:

 

The Bio-Medical Engineer is a key member of the project management team overseeing the biomedical developments of the hospital projects in line with Ministry of Health /Client mandates; including provision of critique of the selection and use of medical equipment, as well as supervising its proper installation performance and functional testing as per manufacturer guidelines

 

Education, Knowledge and Experience

 

  • First Degree in (Bio) Medical Engineering is a requirement;
  • Where the applicant has a First Degree in (Bio) Medical Engineering, the applicant can have a Master’s Degree in Biology and in any other Engineering Field; 
  • If the Master’s Degree is in any other field, the applicant must have a First Degree in Bio-Medical Engineering; or a combination of any of the above;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health
  • Working Knowledge of the OSH Act 2004 as amended 2006

 

  • Minimum of (5) years’ relevant working experience on large construction projects

OR

Equivalent combination of Qualifications and Training

 Key Functions and Responsibilities

Project Management –

 

  • Reviews the Medical Equipment and FF&E Listing provided by the Design Build Contractor making sound recommendations based on factual information and proving the supporting justification;
  • Provides support to requests from the Ministry of Health for medical equipment with regards to reviewing and critiquing the cut sheets and specifications provided for the proposed Medical Equipment and FF&E for suitability, reputation and performance recommending alternatives where necessary in keeping with the desired service to be delivered at the facility. (Inspect medical device for MHRA/CE and FDA approval certificates)
  • Ensures that adequate provision is made for the effective maintenance of Biomedical Equipment
  • Ensures that all contracts for the purchase of Biomedical Equipment include provision for the training of personnel from the Health Sector.
  • Attends meetings and/or negotiations with the Contractor with respect to finalizing the Medical Equipment and FF&E Listing for the project
  • Attends Asset verification activities with the end user and FIDIC Engineer
  • Attends Commissioning activities associated with the Medical Equipment for the project (Inspect and sign off on all medical equipment for appropriateness upon its arrival and assembly on site.)
  • Attends meetings with the client, contractors and UDeCOTT in the planning of Pre-cant and De-cant activities (transitioning) into the new facility 
  • Assists in the co-ordination of training for the end-user on the medical equipment provided
  • Participates in orientation exercises for the end user at hand over phases.
  • Conducts inspection and acceptance of medical equipment and FF&E including trouble shooting where necessary.
  • Liaises with the Project Manager on any biomedical issues or concerns
  • Any other related duties as may be required

 

Health & Safety

 

  • Ensures projects are reviewed and inspected to monitor compliance with building and safety codes and other relevant regulations.
  • Ensures Health and Safety audits are carried out regularly and that reports are completed and actioned.
  • Prepares and submits reports relative to Safety and Health as necessary

 

Cost & Budget Management

 

  • Assists with ensuring that all works and materials are properly assessed against current market trends
  • When necessary, assists with writing the relevant Tender Notes and Board Notes to be submitted to the Tenders Committee and Board of Directors for approvals.
  • Provide justification to inform the decision making process with respect to the acquisition of medical related equipment
  • Preparation of Budgets relative to Biomedical Equipment

 

 

Preparation of Reports

 

  • Prepares weekly and monthly reports on each assigned project as requested utilizing the mandated formats and software.
  • Prepares other reports as may be necessary
