We are seeking a Barge Mate to support the safe and efficient operation of the barge to and from the island, under the general supervision of the captain, and in accordance with maritime and internal rules and regulations.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS

  • Prepare the vessel before operation by checking fuel and fluid levels; check engine and report any problems.
  • Replace or report defective safety equipment and re-fuel if necessary.
  • Assist the captain with navigating the barge in accordance with safety standards.  Perform relief Captain duties as needed.
  • Safely direct loading and unloading of goods, equipment, supply trucks, and heavy construction equipment on the barge at the island and mainland landings, ensuring proper balance, trim, and stability of the barge.
  • Inspect tug and barge to ensure safe and proper operation of equipment prior to loading.
  • Operate barge ramp to allow access to and from the barge and the landing site.
  • Report to the Captain unsafe acts/conditions and other issues with implications for safe operation, marine environment and navigation.
  • After operation, assist the Captain by securing the vessel to the dock, performing all after operations maintenance checks, cleaning the vessel, and shutting down systems.
  • At the end of a shift, assist the Captain by properly transitioning the vessel to the crew on the following shift.
  • Enforce ferry-related rules and regulations and report any incidents or issues to the captain or Security in a
  • Carry out maintenance of cables, ropes, rigging and general appearance of barge. 
  • Assist in safe mooring of equipment during preparations for hurricane or bad weather.

 REQUIREMENTS

  • Secondary school diploma required
  • Current Boat Master’s License (minimum level II) and maritime course required
  • At least 3 years of experience as a barge mate or deck hand.
  • Good knowledge of Caribbean and Antiguan waterways and conditions
  • Physically fit and agile. Able to lift up to 100lbs.
  • 20/20 vision (with corrective lenses if required); able to identify red and green colours
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, especially verbal
  • Ability to work all shifts including evenings, on weekends and public holidays.

 Other

  • Legally authorized to work in Antigua and Barbuda without a work permit.
  • Valid and clean driver's license required
