Assistant Librarian

ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN (Level 6)
Salary – ($2,190,302 - $2,945,713 p.a.)
JOB SUMMARY
Support library operations by managing physical and digital assets (e.g., audiovisual, posters, newspapers) and engaging in public awareness initiatives through the expert use of library information systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under the supervision of the Librarian, sources, catalogues (using Universal Decimal Classification – UDC), index audiovisuals, slides, posters, journals, magazines and newspapers;
- Conduct search for information relating to tourism, classify and catalogue each item with suitable descriptions;
- Conduct search for information sources, compile bibliographies and reading lists, annotate and index materials to develop and augment reference collection;
- Prepare acquisition lists and orders library materials;
- Compile special Jamaica Tourist Board Library publications with information on tourism;
- Maintain the services of the library, record loans and due dates of loans; examine returned items;
- Route periodicals to designated members of staff and ensure that these are returned to the library;
- Deal with the general public seeking information on tourism;
- Provide information on tourism and the Jamaican tourism product to students, civic groups, and other interested parties;
- Undertake special projects for the library as requested by other Divisions/Sections;
- Plan, organise and mount displays and exhibitions;
- Responsible for the timely preparation of current awareness lists and abstracts and overseeing their distribution to staff;
- Undertake research and draft reports on findings as directed by the Librarian;
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Librarian, Manager, Tourism Information Centre or Deputy Director of Tourism, Marketing.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Certificate/Diploma in Library Studies
- Five (5) CXC or GCE O’Level passes, including English Language with two (2) A Level passes
- Minimum of two years’ experience performing library cataloguing and classification
- Experience using UDC would be an asset
- Proficiency in Canva or any other graphic design platform would be an asset
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of modern library techniques, systems, and operations
- Knowledge of library classification, indexing, and cataloguing techniques and processes
- Knowledge of library research methods, processes, and techniques
- Knowledge of the Jamaica tourism product
- Ability to index library collections
- Ability to research information and draft reports
- Ability to plan, organize, and mount exhibitions and displays
- Ability to work under minimum supervision
- Ability to use and manipulate the software packages for the library
- Good communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Basic grasp of digital archival practices, including file organization and metadata.
- High proficiency in Koha and other computer-based library systems
- Comfortable with public speaking and able to communicate the library’s mission enthusiastically to external audiences
UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS
- Normal office environment
- Required to lift, bend, and stretch to access boxes
- Possible exposure to dust from the collection and within storage areas
AUTHORITIES OF THE JOB
- To maintain the services of the library and provide information services to the clientele
- To source, order, and index library items designated by the Librarian
- To organize and mount exhibitions and displays as requested
- To maintain collections under his/her supervision
