The successful candidate will join the Department of Physiology, which is primarily engaged in teaching activities, though scientific and medical education research is strongly encouraged.

The ideal candidate will be a team player, open to feedback, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. They should have a strong service record and a demonstrated history of excellence in teaching Physiology. Required qualifications include a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree in Physiology. Candidates with additional qualifications or experience in medical education (e.g., a master’s degree, fellowship, or higher training) and clear evidence of its application in instructional practice are of particular interest. This position requires a solid understanding of the U.S. MD curriculum and the USMLE examination requirements. Candidates must also demonstrate experience working in—and fostering—a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or a strong commitment to doing so as a faculty member at AUA.

Responsibilities:

As is directed by the Executive Dean of Basic Sciences, or the Chair of the Department of Physiology

  1. Deliver high-quality, innovative teaching in physiology, with a focus on clinically relevant pathophysiology and disease.
  2. Develop and deliver instructional content using evidence-based pedagogical methods, including active learning techniques in lectures, tutorials, team-based learning (TBL), and small group sessions.
  3. Formulate clear learning outcomes that align with assessments, small group activities, and other active learning sessions.
  4. Design integrated small group activities, TBLs, and tutorials that incorporate physiology with related disciplines in a system-based curriculum, including anatomy, biochemistry, molecular science, pathology, microbiology, immunology, and pharmacology.
  5. Provide academic advising to assigned students, guiding them toward their educational goals using professional judgment and knowledge of physiology, teaching strategies, and student needs.
  6. Collaborate with faculty from basic and clinical sciences to support interdisciplinary integration of physiology and pathophysiology within system-based courses.
  7. Actively contribute to the development of formative and summative assessments, ensuring timely submission and alignment with course objectives.
  8. Facilitate integrated small group sessions and tutorials involving interdisciplinary content.
  9. Incorporate student feedback to continuously improve teaching effectiveness.
  10. Participate in the development, revision, and implementation of courses and curricula.
  11. Provide mentorship, guidance, and academic support to students.
  12. Engage in academic program activities and curriculum development.
  13. Participate in educational programs within the department.
  14. Assist with academic programming within the College of Medicine, as needed.
  15. Conduct data collection or research assignments as requested.
  16. Attend and contribute to departmental meetings, campus events, and academic activities.
  17. Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the field of physiology.
  18. Teach in an inclusive and respectful manner, free from discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, disability, age, sex, gender identity, or marital status.
  19. Perform other duties consistent with the responsibilities of a faculty member, as assigned by the Executive Dean, Department Chair, or other authorized personnel.

Service to the university:

  1. Participate in faculty meetings and academic planning.
  2. Engage in faculty development programs.
  3. Serve on institutional committees in either an appointed or elected capacity.
  4. Contribute to community outreach initiatives organized by the university.

Research:

  1. Attend scientific meetings at least once a year in one’s field of specialization or medical education.

Qualifications and essential requirements:

  1. A Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree in physiology.
  2. Prior teaching experience in a medical school in the US, Canada, UK, or Caribbean is preferred.
  3. For appointment at the Assistant Professor level: minimum of three years teaching experience in pre-clinical medical education.
  4. For Associate Professor: minimum of five years teaching experience in pre-clinical medical education.
  5. Strong understanding of USMLE physiology/pathophysiology content.
  6. Familiarity with evidence-based teaching practices and educational technology.
  7. Commitment to the mission and diversity of the university.
  8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students and colleagues.
  9. Cultural competence and professionalism in all interactions.
  10. Ability to support and mentor remediating students.
  11. Strong organizational and time management skills.
  12. Capacity to work effectively both independently and in teams.
  13. Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a high-pressure academic environment.
  14. Commitment to ongoing scholarly development and continuing education.

Skills:

  1. Proficiency with Microsoft 365, particularly PowerPoint and Word.
  2. Experience with audience response systems is an advantage.
