Position: Assistant Accountant 
Location: Port of Spain
Employment Type: Permanent
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Salary: $8,000


Job Summary

Our client in the Port of Spain area is seeking a detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to provide critical support in payroll management, fixed asset administration, and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts. 


Key Responsibilities

Payroll Management:

  • Process payroll by verifying, calculating, and inputting employee pay and deductions.

  • Maintain confidentiality of employee and payroll information.

  • Prepare statutory and other deductions, including Health Surcharge, PAYE, NIS, and external deductions, for payment via check or ACH.

  • Prepare payroll accounts, including employee loan accounts and reconciliations.

  • Reconcile accumulated wages and generate annual TD4 slips.

Fixed Asset Management:

  • Maintain and update the Fixed Asset Register accurately.

  • Calculate and journalize monthly depreciation.

  • Conduct annual fixed asset verification.

Balance Sheet Reconciliation:

  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations.

  • Maintain, update, and reconcile Deferred Income and Deferred Cost schedules.

  • Reconcile and balance accounts to the general ledger monthly.

Other Accounting Duties:

  • Prepare, generate, and file bi-monthly VAT returns and quarterly taxes.

  • Maintain and update tender requirements.

  • Support accounts payable and receivable transactions as needed.

  • Assist with inventory stock counts and external audits.

  • Perform other related duties as requested by management.

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum: Accounting Degree or ACCA Level 2.

  • At least three (3) years of experience in an accounting environment.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience with Microsoft Business Central or Great Plains preferred.

  • Understanding of basic principles in finance, accounting, HR, marketing, and IT is an asset.
