The Business and Employment Centre is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Accounting Assistant to join our Finance team.

*Please note only suitably qualified candidates in BARBADOS will be considered 

In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring the accuracy, efficiency, and compliance of the company’s financial operations while providing reliable support to management and other departments.

 

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Maintain and update accounts in the company’s accounting software with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Prepare, post, and reconcile journal entries to the general ledger.
  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and year-end reconciliations, ensuring timely resolution of discrepancies.
  • Generate and analyse financial reports to support decision-making.

Accounts Payable & Receivable

  • Manage the accounts payable cycle, from invoice verification to payment execution via the company’s online banking portal.
  • Oversee accounts receivable processes, including issuing invoices, monitoring aging reports, and following up on overdue accounts.
  • Develop and maintain vendor and client relationships to ensure smooth transactions.

Payroll & Statutory Compliance

  • Prepare and process monthly payroll, ensuring accuracy in salaries, deductions, and statutory contributions.
  • Coordinate with the Payroll Officer to post payroll-related entries and reconcile payroll accounts monthly.
  • Prepare and file VAT, NIS, PAYE, and TAMIS submissions in compliance with local regulations.
  • Serve as backup for the Payroll Officer during absences.

Audit & Compliance

  • Assist the Finance Manager in preparing documentation and schedules for internal and external audits.
  • Ensure all accounting practices comply with statutory requirements and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate and well-organised financial records for easy retrieval.

Process Improvement & Support

  • Identify opportunities to enhance accounting processes for greater efficiency and accuracy.
  • Support the Finance Manager in special projects, budgeting, and forecasting activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s degree will be considered an asset).
  • 2 – 4 years’ experience in an accounting role, preferably in a multi-service or fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience with accounting and payroll software (PayPak, Sage, QuickBooks, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of double-entry accounting, reconciliations, and financial reporting.

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills; able to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Effective communicator, both written and verbal, with a professional and client-focused approach.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing to team objectives.
  • Discreet and trustworthy when handling sensitive financial information.
