Job Summary                                                                                                                                           

The Accountant is responsible for the full accounting function at the Credit Union. He/She will work with external auditors to conduct auditing exercises and will also be responsible for presenting financial reports to the Board during Board Meetings. Works with spreadsheets, sales and purchase ledgers and journals.

Responsibilities                                                                  

  • Manages all Accounting functions of the Credit Union.
  • Establishes and oversees compliance with internal controls.
  • Prepares monthly, income/expenditure statements, receipts and payment statements, Accounts Payable reconciliation, Accounts Receivable reconciliation, bank reconciliation, cash flow report, balance sheets and other reports as directed; maintains the accounting database; and analyses and evaluates accounting data relevant to different projects.
  • Reconciles financial discrepancies by analysing account information.
  • Liaises with external auditors.
  • Complies with financial policies and regulations as well as Credit Union Act, Policies and Regulations.
  • Monitors and evaluates the accounting and financial control systems and procedures established to assist in the delivery of the operations of the Credit Union and its subsidiaries.
  • Prepares the payroll for the staff of the Credit Union, as well as for the staff of any other subsidiary of the Credit Union.
  • Reconciles the general ledger and statements as required and maintains the checking accounts.
  • Ensures all accounting records are kept up to date and accurate.
  • Verifies and releases all ACH transactions in a timely manner.
  • Assigns and reviews the work of the Accounts Clerk.
  • Identifies and enacts cost efficiencies and process improvement opportunities throughout the Credit Union and its subsidiaries.
  • Performs related duties assigned to support the team and contribute to overall goals.

Qualifications, Training  and/or Experience                       

  • Fully ACCA qualified, BSc Accounting, or CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
  • Minimum of five (5) years accounting experience including two (2) years at a senior level preferably within a credit union or a financial institution.
  • Experience with integrated enterprise/accounting software system (eg. Emortelle)
  • Any combination of training and experience can be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities                                           

  • Knowledge of credit union operations and their objectives.
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping practices and principles.
  • Skilled in IFRS activities relevant to the Credit Union
  • Skilled in literacy and numeracy.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office and computers.
  • Ability to work co-operatively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and carry out instructions.
