JOB SUMMARY:

The successful candidates:

  • Must be available for training at night, on weekends and public holidays.
  • Will be required to embark and disembark pilot ladders in adverse weather conditions whilst the vessel is underway.
  • Must be medically and physically fit to perform the duties of a marine pilot.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of a recognized maritime institution.
  • Minimum Class 3 Foreign Going certificate.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as an Officer in Charge of a Navigation Watch.
  • Knowledge of Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS) and Bridge Resource Management (BRM).
  • Ship handling & manoeuvring experience in a simulated environment would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the shipping industry.

REQUIRED SKILLS & SPECIALISED TECHNIQUES:

  • Excellent decision-making skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage high stress situations
  • Ability to use Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS)
  • Working knowledge of maritime risk identification, assessment, and management
  • Sound planning and organization skills

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The successful applicants will be required to attend scheduled classroom sessions and accompany pilots on board ships to observe the ship handling and manoeuvring exercises.
  • The apprentices are required to submit monthly records of these activities and make themselves available on completion, to sit the pilotage examinations.
  • The apprentices must be prepared to commit to the programme for a minimum period of three years, subject to qualification, experience and satisfactory completion of the programme.
