Headend Satellite Engineer
Primary objective of the job:
To design, manage and maintain the IPTV broadcast elements and other system components at the Satellite Head End portion of the FTTH network. To guide and provide inputs into the rollout of such a network from greenfield state to operational state. To dimension capacity and determine quality measurement criteria for the operation of this TV network.
Number of persons managed/supervised and their positions:
  • 4 x Satellite IPTV Technicians
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and repair satellite earth stations including dishes, LNAs, waveguides, dehydrators, up/down converters, solid state power amplifiers, modems, and monitoring control systems.
  • Monitor and analyze satellite communication link, identify performance issues, coordinate with satellite and teleport providers.
  • Provide engineering and subject matter expert (SME) support for communication system designs, projects, and upgrades.
  • Create and maintain communications systems documentation.
  • Oversee antenna riggers when on station for antenna installations. Perform minor tower work for urgent repairs.
  • Maintain 12 V and 24 V DC power systems used in assorted communications systems. Manage UPS and Generator systems.
  • Configure and maintain IP TV equipment.
  • Create and manage processes and procedures for operating and maintaining the Head End.
  • Creation of quality metric KPIs for assessing the performance of the Head End.
  • Training/Mentoring: Capable of knowledge management and team learning by transferring knowledge through workshops, mentoring and coaching, presentations and on the job training for engineers.

Academic qualifications and experience required for job:
  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Engineering, Communications Systems or Satellite Systems.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar environment
  • Diversified satellite engineering expertise in design, system integration and operational support. This includes use of Satellite M&C software.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting and maintaining IPTV communications equipment. In depth knowledge of IP Networks, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, MPLS-TE, QoS, Cisco IOS & IOS-XR
  • Hands on working experience with provisioning and troubleshooting Cisco routers including ASR9k, 7600
  • Experience with spectrum analyzers, RF service monitors, data test sets, oscilloscopes, RF power meters.
  • Experience with fiber optic cable splicing, OTDRs, 66/110 punch blocks/tools, BICSI cabling standards .
Functional Skills:
  • Computer Literate in a Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc)
  • Report / business Writing Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
