The Port Authority of Jamaica wishes to recruit a SAFETY COORDINATOR in the Harbours Department.

SALARY SCALE: $5,612,841.27 - $6,418,683.77 per annum.

JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for facilitating compliance with safety guidelines and for monitoring and assessing hazardous and unsafe situations at the Harbours department to ensure a safe working environment and minimise the risk of/prevent any job-related accidents or injuries. In pursuit of these responsibilities, the incumbent is required to liaise with the company’s Safety Officer. The scope of responsibilities includes buildings, sites and general premises inspections and recommendations to address safety issues.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Operations Management
  • Certificate in occupational health and safety
  • Three years’ progressive experience in the discipline

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Inspect premises, work sites and the work of personnel to identify issues or non-conformity (e.g., not using protective equipment).
  • Assist with/facilitate:

-          Installations, maintenance, disposal of substances etc. and make recommendations relative to compliance and improved process and practice

-          Ensuring adequate pollution control programmes are in place at the Harbours

-          Employee compliance with wearing PPEs; report on non-compliance

-          Working conditions and activities compliance with safety guidelines

-          Educating staff on health and safety protocols and practices

-          Assessing equipment/machinery to gauge if they are safe and in working order

-          Updating/implementing the safety plans for the department including the outstations

  • Liaise with HR in respect of OHS training for Harbours staff and ensure new hires are orientated on effective safety requirements
  • Liaise with supervisor and Procurement to ensure availability of an adequate supply of safety devices for employees
  • Review and become familiar with contractors’ and other safety plans presented for work being carried out at the locations/sites
  • Ensure that proper records are kept on safety, particularly in relation to incidents/accidents and staff/contractor non-compliance with safety requirements
  • Review accident/injury reports and make recommendations relative to minimising/ preventing incidents
  • Prepare reports on portfolio matters
  • Any other duties assigned.
