JOB TITLE:                            Graduate Teacher – Agricultural Science

LOCATION:                       North Caicos but at the discretion of TCI Public Service may be relocated to another part of TCI

JOB SUMMARY:

This is a specialist position which has unit level responsibility for the teaching of one or more of the school’s curriculum subjects to students.

 

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Prepare and deliver agricultural science lessons using a range of skills such as teaching, lectures, field trips, demonstrations, hands on/ practical’s experiences to promote effective learning
  2. Plan and develop curriculum, and work in collaboration with the mathematics department to deliver authentic agricultural science lessons
  3. Guide agricultural science students in laboratory work assignments.
  4. Mark work, giving appropriate feedback and maintain records of students’ progress and development in the agricultural science programme.
  5. Research new topic areas, maintain up-to-date subject knowledge and then devise and write new curriculum materials in agricultural science
  6. Select and use a range of different learning resources and equipment, including LCD projectors, podcasts and interactive white boards and farming tools, where available, in the teaching and learning of agricultural science
  7. Undertake pastoral duties, such as taking on the role of form teacher, and supporting students on an individual basis through academic or personal difficulties where appropriate. Refer all other matters to the relevant member of staff
  8. Prepare students for agricultural science (CSEC) external examinations.
  9. Organise field trips to encourage students’ innovation and creativity.

10. Manage student behaviour in the classroom and on school premises, and   apply appropriate and effective measures in cases of misbehaviour.

11. Participate in and organise extracurricular activities, such as formal dinners, social activities, fundraising events and sporting events as directed by the head of department of members of the administrative team.

12. Participate in staff meetings, departmental meetings, PTA meetings, parents evening and whole school staff development seminars/workshops.

13. Liaise with other professionals, such Agricultural extension officers, careers advisers, guidance counsellors, educational psychologists, and social welfare officers.

14. Help guide students in their selection of career choices in the areas of agricultural science

15. Answer and resolve students’ academic problems arising in agricultural science classes

16. Teach students the relevant and appropriate concepts and practical skills in crop production, business of farming, animal production, animal management and horticulture.

17. Assist students with SBA’s and record keeping methods in agricultural science

18. Undergo regular observations and participate in regular in-service           training (INSET) as part of continuing professional development (CPD) in agricultural science

19. Teach the Agricultural Science secondary curriculum, in Forms 1 to 5 appropriate to the age and learning needs of the students.

20. Develop hydroponic methods of agriculture used to compensate for the scarcity of land and importance of water recycling in agricultural use.

21. Adhere to all Public Service codes, rules and regulations.

22. Perform other related tasks as required.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Agricultural science or a relevant academic discipline AND
  • A teacher certificate or diploma in agricultural science (The certificate or diploma may be encompassed in the degree).
  • A minimum of two (2) year teaching practice experience in a classroom setting at the secondary school level during the course of the teacher training to respond effectively to the challenges of the job.

 

For Vocational Teachers.

  • An industry standard qualification (e.g. city and guilds) in a relevant vocational discipline.

           AND

  • A teacher certificate or diploma AND
  • Associated vocational experience of a minimum of three (3) years

 

SALARY: $48,320.00 per annum plus allowances

For persons recruited outside of the Turks & Caicos Islands a two-year extendable contract is offered. Other benefits in addition to basic salary include a Housing Allowance, End-of contract gratuity of 6%, return passages for a family of up to two children under the age of 18 years, freight cost and duty exemption on personal effects imported within six months of the appointment.
