The incumbent is responsible for evaluating credit proposals to determine credit worthiness and appropriate risk exposure.

Job Summary

The incumbent is responsible for evaluating credit proposals to determine credit worthiness and appropriate risk exposure. Responsible also for providing assistance to Branch/Commercial Business Centre (CBC) network in determining optimal credit structures and provides feedback to improve the quality of future credit applications.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyzes credit applications to determine the credit worthiness of the application and prepares related recommendations for approval on a timely basis, which also includes performing detailed analysis and interpretation of financial information
  • Liaises with Branch Managers and Account Managers with regards to clarification/guidance on credit submissions and management of accounts
  • Assists in the preparation of Board Notes for decision-making on credit applications by the Group’s Board of Directors and Board Credit Committee and presented by the AGM
  • Liaises with Legal Department to obtain feedback/clarification on legal matters as required
  • Liaises with external agencies (Central Bank, Insurers, Financial institutions, research organizations, etc.) for assistance in the collection of data to inform credit analysis
  • Keeps abreast of PESTE factors (Political, Economic, Social, Technological and Environmental) in relation to identifying credit risk and in support of credit recommendations
  • Reviews policy and procedures to ensure operational efficiency and recommends amendments as required
  • Provides input and assists in the conduct of credit training in conjunction with management for staff development
  • Compiles and prepares operational statistics of the department such as turnaround time, approval rates, etc. to improve operational efficiency and service quality
  • Reviews the Overdraft’s Excess Reports to monitor the quality of the Group’s overdraft portfolio and other reports as required
  • Drafts and vets letters of offer on all terms and conditions for approved credit applications for senior management’s review including letters of decline, before preparing / finalizing letters of offer/decline and Board ratification forms for sign off by Senior Management
  • Initiates and undertakes projects relevant to the development of credit structures for templates, revolving lines of credit, etc. as required
  • Responds to the internal customers’ requests, enquiries, incoming calls in a courteous and timely manner consistent with operating standards and referral to Manager where necessary
  • Completes special projects and other delegated activities as assigned by the Manager

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must possess a First Degree in Finance, Economics or Business from a reputable University or level two (2) ACCA or equivalent (at least year one (1) CA, CFA, CMA, etc.) and a minimum two (2) years banking experience in a financial institution in credit preferably commercial credit. The ideal candidate should possess good communication, analytical, conceptual, research, negotiating, problem solving, strong conflict resolution, team building and computer literacy skills. Knowledge of the Group’s Products and Services and Operating Software Systems would also be required.
