Position Description: Accountant 

Position Description

The Accountant contributes to the daily success of MOS (Mission of Sight)-Jamaica by supporting the CEO and President for the successful operation of the accounting and financial processes of the office. He or she performs various accounting and administrative tasks relating to the financial activities of the business, including maintaining documentation and records proficiently to ensure correctness and promptness of deliverables.  This role requires someone who is professional, meticulous and organized and is able to handle projects and deliver high-quality work with minimum supervision.  


Major Areas of Responsibility

The following is a list of expected results of this position, along with the essential functions (“Responsibilities”) necessary to achieve them. These include:

Accounting Processes

  • Overseeing all aspects of accounting and finance. 

  • Investigating and reconciling discrepancies in accounts receivable and payable, as well as payroll.

  • Preparing and making bank deposits, as well as preparing invoice statements for review.

  • Auditing purchase orders and invoices.

  • Maintaining accurate records, including journals, ledgers, receipts, and invoices.

  • Ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Categorize and Reconcile Bank Statements and Credit Cards in QuickBooks Online

  • Create MOS monthly invoices in Acuitas

  • Reconciling bank deposits from patients with the account and assigning the payments to the patients' accounts.

  • Communicate with patients and the surgery team regarding the direct deposit process.

  • Be present in the surgery office on all surgery days to assist with payment queries and reconciliation.
  • Submit end-of-day sales reports from Acuitas
  • Liaise with BNS and Tax office as needed
  • Facilitate vendor payments as appropriate.
  • Access and file confidential information as appropriate.
  • Submitting monthly statutory taxes
  • Filing for TCC renewal
  • Ensure Companies' file requirements are met
  • Hold all financial matters in strict confidence.

General Business Processes

  • Enter the and provider’s earnings for payment during SX.
  • Support the Surgical and Outreach Administrator with administrative and inventory-related tasks as needed. 
  • Support the MOS team with entering wages/salaries for staff and casual laborers
  • Support the MOS team with all matters relating to transporting and housing the teams that come in to conduct surgery.
  • Conduct inventory counts after each surgery and submit a report for review.  
  • Filing, typing, printing, copying, scanning, and faxing as necessary.  Using Google Drive and Suite of services.
  • Create documents/forms when the need arises.
  • Maintaining records and documentation.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of information.
  • Liaising with various parties to gather and share relevant


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent knowledge and experience in computer skills, Microsoft Office, and QuickBooks.

  • Hands-on experience with the use of accounting computer programs

  • Sense of ownership and pride in your performance and its impact on company’s success

  • Good time-management skills

  • Demonstrates analytical skills through attention to details and problem-solving techniques.

  • Demonstration of advanced interpersonal skills; readily contributing to a team environment, fostering camaraderie, respect and professionalism.

  • Excellent communication, demonstrated in both verbal and listening skills with employees.  Demonstrates a professional and calm posture when confronted with a disgruntled employee.

  • Models a strong work ethic for staff by being reliable, dependable, and willing to “pitch-in” outside of normal position responsibilities, providing an excellent leadership example.

Education and Experience

  • Bsc. in Accounting or Finance, additional qualifications/certificate are a plus
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in Accounting and Finance.
  • 3+ years of related experience
  • ACCA Certification a +
