SUMMARY :

Under the Supervision of the Lead Aquarist and the Chief Research and Conservation Officer, the Aquarist must perform a variety of skilled duties involved in the care, observation, training, maintenance, propagation, and management of assigned aquatic species and the presentation of such species to the general public in an educational and attractive manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Observe animal species according to assigned schedule to determine physical and behavioral health and well-being, check animals for abnormalities and report condition to Curator or veterinarian as appropriate. Provide behavioral training as appropriate and directed for animals assigned to incumbent's care.
  • Maintain clean animal exhibits and holding areas to assure the health and welfare of animals; remove animal feces and other material on a regular basis.
  • Perform all Water Quality testing and Sampling for analysis that pertains to Cayman Turtle Centre's Effluent Discharge Permit upheld by Water Authority Cayman.
  • Perform On Site and routine Water Quality testing and Laboratory duties as and when needed.
  • Prepare, store and distribute food according to established standards, types and diets; monitor feeding habits and report any changes or abnormalities; monitor food levels to assure sufficient quantities are available. Prepare and administer medications, food supplements and vitamins according to guidelines established by the Veterinarian.
  • Maintain inventory and up to date records of food stock. Reorder and restock when necessary.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repair of animal exhibits and related systems; prepare new exhibits and input regarding exhibit design and renovation to facilitate cleaning, enhance viewing and improve living conditions for the animals.
  • Perform necessary duties pertaining to the Quarantine Process of fish and other aquatic animals along with any other duties that correlate to Marine Quarantine processes and protocols.
  • Provide appropriate enrichment to animals in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Communicate with the public regarding animals and related matters; answer questions and assure proper presentation of animals in various formats.
  • Maintain records and reports regarding assigned species including animal condition reports; conduct research regarding animal species as needed; prepare daily reports, health reports and other reports specific to the assigned area.
  • Maintain water quality to keep aquatic animals in a healthy condition as assigned.
  • Perform behavioral observations; patrol assigned areas of the Park and conduct visual checks on animals; perform or arrange for corrective action should any issues arise.
  • Move and remove animal species to different areas or exhibits as determined by proper care, feeding and safety methods.
  • Provide work direction and assist in training volunteers and part-time animal care personnel as assigned; attend staff meetings, educational conferences and seminars as needed.
  • Communicate with the Curator and Lead Aquarist regarding needed supplies, issues regarding exhibits, animal health or public safety issues or concerns. Communicate with veterinarian regarding animal health matters; provide assistance in catching or restraining animals in accordance with established safety procedures in order to administer health care.
  • Input animal data such as feed logs, Quarantine processes, treatment, and inventory.
  • Provide input regarding the collecting, purchase, transfer, propagation or trading of aquatic species as needed. Conduct and/or participate in conservation programs to assist in the propagation, education, enforcement and other activities related to long-term conservation of assigned species.
  • The E-quarist online aquatics course is available to all crew members in the marine department and full participation in and completing this course is mandatory in order for employment to subsist. The first module must be completed before the end of their 6 month probation period.
  • Assure the safety of animals, employees and the visiting public from injury or mishap.
  • Any other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
  • Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or three or more years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. GCSE level minimum in English and math or equivalent.
  • Previous commercial experience in a primary care role at a fish or other aquaculture farm.
  • Must have knowledge of standard inventory policies, procedures, and regulations related to aquarium husbandry.
  • Able to work independently and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Physically fit and able to lift and carry at least 50 lbs.
  • Strong swimmer and/ or dive certification.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to provide accurate and up to date reporting on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace transferring species and restocking species as needed.
