Systems Engineer - Operations

The successful candidate is responsible for developing engineering designs, specifications and standards for the Company’s power systems and delivering engineering solutions to ensure delivery of reliable, efficient, safe and economical engineering and energy solutions to customers.

The incumbent may be assigned to any of the Departments requiring engineering expertise such as Generation, Transmission & Distribution, or Project Execution Unit to manage operations and/or manage projects within schedule and budget limitations while coordinating the activities of teams, contractors and vendors.

In this role the successful candidate will be required to:

• Supervise operating personnel and coordinate activities with vendors and contractors
• Participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of comprehensive plans for improvements to the Company’s power systems
• Manage projects of varying complexities including scope, scheduling, budgeting, procurement and management of resources to ensure projects are completed within time, budget and quality requirements
• Oversee testing, equipment specifications, installation and commissioning to ensure equipment and systems are functioning according to specifications and safety standards
• Develop technical and functional specifications and performance requirements for equipment and systems
• Review existing systems, processes, procedures and work instructions and implement appropriate system, plant reliability and process improvements and evaluate their effectiveness
• Recommend and implement short- and long-range system planning measures for improved asset performance, reliability and sustainability
• Manage all aspects of engineering or commercial assignments according to Company and utility best practice standards
• Provide engineering analysis and technical support across the business to ensure optimal utilization of power system facilities
• Represent the Company on various local and regional power systems planning committees and contribute to the evaluation of local and regional opportunities
• Work within a shift system as assigned to provide support and coverage during abnormal conditions which impair service or create public safety hazards
• Conducts formal and informal appraisals.

Qualifications and Experience

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology or a related field
• Post-graduate on-the-job training in electrical, mechanical or power systems engineering, suitable for professional registration in an electric or other energy industry
• Possession of the Registered Professional Engineer license would be an asset
• Knowledge of power systems engineering including generation plant, transmission and distribution system design and operating standards
• Project management experience spanning both system design and field work

The successful candidate will be required to complete a structured programme of training determined by an assessment of the current skill level to achieve competence in the role and Registration as Professional Engineer in accordance with the requirement of the Barbados Engineer Registration Board.
