To install, maintain and repair electrical wiring, electrical controls, lighting systems, equipment and fixtures which must be done in accordance to the relevant codes within Trinidad & Tobago.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Reports to and provides general assistance to the Maintenance Manager as it relates to the upkeep of the assigned facilities.
  • Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, controls, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Diagnose/ troubleshoot malfunctioning systems, apparatus and components, using the appropriate test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Ability to inspect and connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers or other components.
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Advise your direct manager on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters and voltmeters to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
  • Maintain current electrician’s license or identification card to meet government’s regulations.
  • Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes.
  • Use a variety of tools and equipment such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment including ammeters and test lamps. 
  • Install ground leads and connect power cables to equipment, such as motors.
  • Perform business management duties such as maintaining records and files, preparing reports and ordering supplies and equipment.
  • Repair or replace wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, and roofs to install, maintain or repair electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures.
  • Place conduit (pipes or tubing) inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pull insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes.
  • Fasten small metal or plastic boxes to walls to house electrical switches or outlets.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, such as digging trenches to lay conduit and moving and lifting and lifting heavy objects.
  • Provide preliminary cost estimates for materials and services.
  • Provide assistance during emergencies.
  • Perform general electrical maintenance.
  • Ensure all activities are done in accordance to the national electrical code and building regulations.
  • Exhibit a high level of professionalism at all times.
  • Assist other departments from time to time on projects.
  • Perform any other related duties as required.
  • Meet and execute KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI’s) as set out in the Department.

  Required Competencies

  • Good communication skills both written and oral.
  • Ability to plan and organize and prioritize.
  • Capacity to carry out manual lifting and handling of heavy objects and must be physically fit as the position involves lifting and walking.
  • Good “handy man” skills with the ability to undertake general building maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Good cleaning skills with the ability to undertake cleaning up of the assigned workspace.
  • Energetic and highly motivated with a proactive approach and ability to carry out tasks with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
  • Ability to relate to a variety of people and develop sound working relationships.
  • Ability to work with deadlines and be attentive to detail.
  • Must be able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A wireman’s license and a certificate in electrical installation 
  • Minimum of 4 to 5 years’ work experience as an electrician.
  • A minimum of five (5) CXC subjects including Mathematics and English.
  • A valid driver’s permit.
