Laboratory Manager


The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Laboratory Manager.  To provide technical duties with the added responsibility of planning, organizing and directing the daily operation of the department. They actively support the strategic directions, goals and objectives of the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority.


PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):


  1. Establishes and implements departmental policies and procedures in conjunction with the clinical pathologist/pathologist.
  2. Prepares shift and on call schedules for laboratory staff to ensure safe and adequate coverage of the department.
  3. Prepares and manages the laboratory budget.
  4. Facilitates the strategic planning process for the laboratory.
  5. Establishes and monitors quality improvements, rationalizing laboratory services and managing risk, occupational health and safety activities (in conjunction with clinical pathologist/pathologist).
  6. Ensures supervision, continuous training and discipline of laboratory staff.
  7. Fosters a learning environment by example and by encouraging professional growth and development of staff.
  8. Develops and revises job descriptions and conducts performance appraisals.
  9. Communicates and interacts with clients and partners.
  10. Ensures an effective laboratory information system for the timely delivery of results and to facilitate laboratory management and planning (in the absence of clinical pathologist/pathologist).
  11. Develops and maintains department records, reports and patient statistics.
  12. Participates on hospital committees as required and networks with community agencies, groups and professional affiliations.
  13. Ensures that continuing education programs are appropriate and made available to laboratory staff.
  14. Establishes and monitors a quality control program (in the absence of a quality officer).
  15. Selects and evaluates the most appropriate test procedure and equipment for the laboratory(in conjunction with clinical pathologist/pathologist)
  16. Performs all duties of the Laboratory Technologist (See job description for Laboratory Technologist).
  17. Ensures that the physician and environmental conditions of the laboratory work area are appropriate for testing.
  18. Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  19. Responsible for investigating new products and evaluating new testing methods and new instrumentation before implementation in the Clinical Laboratory.
  20. Responsible for being informed regarding current technologies through discussion with vendors, technical staff and the Pathologist.
  21. Consults other department, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement for testing.
  22. Any other duties assigned by the Chief of Medical Staff.

Minimum Requirements:

Education & Experience

v  Bachelors of Science Degree in Medical Technology, Biology or Chemistry.

v  Is qualified as a Laboratory Technologist and certified as appropriate.

v  Have 6 or more years of relevant laboratory experience.


Licenses and/or registrations

v  Registered with the Allied Health Professionals Council





Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

v  Competence in human resource and systems as evidenced by management training and experiences.

v  Must be well versed in all departments of a clinical laboratory.

v  Good interpersonal and communication skills.

v  Ability to negotiate for laboratory resources.

v  Ability to forge supportive partnerships with key stakeholders

v  Basic computer knowledge.

v  Proficiency in use of laboratory equipment and testing

v  Must be courteous and well mannered

v  Must possess good customer relation skill

v  Must be willing to continually upgrade skills and knowledge

v  Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

v  Additional languages preferred.

SALARY:  Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
