The American University of Antigua is seeking to recruit individuals for a Pre-Clinical Medical Education Internship/Fellowship.

 

AUA invites applications from innovative and creative 4th year medical students or medical graduates working toward a clinical internship/residency or who have decided to enter the profession of medical education. Our internship/fellowship is a full-time program that supports medical students as they apply for match, and medical or science graduates as they transition into the field of Medical Education, by offering active learning small group training, career advising, a certificate/degree in Health Professions Education, and mentored research opportunities.

 

Job Summary:

With the ACGME emphasizing teaching skills in today’s residency programs, the pre-clinical medical education internship/fellowship enhances a residency application by:

 

  • Earning a Post-Graduate Health Profession Education certificate/degree
  • Opportunities to present/publish scholarly work in medical education
  • ERAS advising (personal statement, CV, mock interviews, etc.)
  • Advising during Match and SOAP week (rank order list, signaling programs, etc.)
  • Teaching using the social-constructive situated teaching skills desired by clinical residency programs
  • Training in research methods, pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment/evaluation
  • Support as one prepares for employment (clinician or medical educator).

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help develop and deliver course content incorporating evidence-based education practices using active learning techniques in the small group environment
  • Participate and pass with a minimum of an 80% in health profession courses
  • Participate in all career advising sessions and assignments
  • Participate in scholarly research projects with the intent of presentation/publication
  • Facilitation of small groups that can include approximately 10-20 students
  • Participate in all onboarding and training activities
  • Advising and mentoring students in academic, curricular, and living on the island
  • Implement effective remediation learning for students
  • Participate in curriculum development
  • Complete appropriate administrative paperwork in a timely manner
  • Maintain weekly office hours
  • Participate in all University and College of Graduate Studies meetings
  • Other duties as assigned by CGS Dean and/or Director 

 

Education/Qualifications:

Before starting the program, the applicant must have:

 

  •  MD or equivalent
  •  Passed Step 1 and preferably Step 2CK or the equivalent exams
  • Willing to reside in Antigua during the duration of the program
  • Demonstrate commitment to support the mission and vision of the university and diversity of students and faculty of the institution
  • Outstanding English communication skills in writing, speaking, presenting and collaboration with students, faculty members and others
  • Demonstrate ability to interact professionally in a culturally sensitive manner
  • A good team player
  • Ability to advise and work with remediating students
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment
  •  Strong self-starter skills and able to independently, complete assignments under pressure of deadlines and competing priorities
  •  Engage in scholarly research activities
  •  Experience with Microsoft 365, particularly PowerPoint and Word are required
