Job Summary

The incumbent performs scheduling activities for projects in development and execution (including shutdown-related works) in the Engineering Department. The Scheduler is responsible for developing the schedules in conjunction with the Project Manager/Lead Engineer, tracking progress, providing a forecast of the work to be done, analyzing project schedules, and making recommendations for recovery plans and optimization. The Scheduler will also aid the Vice President, Engineering in the development and implementation of enhanced project control systems and processes. The services will also collaborate with the Operations department towards identifying synergies with the departments’ workplans. The incumbent reports to the Vice President Engineering and liaises with the respective Lead Engineers for the projects. The position is also required to provide job-related support to the group of companies, its subsidiaries, and new business ventures as required.

 

Dimensions

The position of Scheduler-Engineering is accountable for the provision of scheduling services for all projects in Engineering and at all project stages. The scheduling services, as a critical component, will serve to support the project, towards achieving the project targets. The position must have detailed knowledge of scheduling software and project controls techniques and methodologies as well as a good working knowledge of the project stage gate process. The position must be adept at relating to and communicating with all functional levels in the project team, the organization, and contractors as it gathers, evaluates, and analyses schedule-related data. The position must also have a strong proficiency in developing comprehensive reports on project progress.

Nature & Scope

The position will be required to work with Project Managers/Project Leads, to develop project schedules and interpret and analyze project data to ensure that schedule targets are achieved. Of utmost importance, the position must provide support to the project team, the Engineering Department and collaborate with the Operations department in an efficient, effective, and timely manner. The position must evidence excellent interpersonal and communication skills, organizing, time management, and analytical skills. In addition, the position must maintain awareness of project priorities, issues, concerns, and requirements, including that of the Group Project Management Methodology Framework.

 

The position interfaces internally with key departments such as Business Development, Operations, and HSSS as well as the Project Management Office (PMO). Externally, the position interfaces with the various Contractors for the projects.

 

It is also imperative that the incumbent participate in and encourage the use of accepted Safety programs and initiatives that are instilled in the Company’s policies, procedures, and as an extension, the safety culture.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

The incumbent is responsible for:

  1. Develop and manage project schedules which are critical to the overall project success; these schedules must be resource loaded and built/managed in MS Projects and Projects Online.
  2. Develop strong working relationships with the Project Manager, Project Engineer, and Lead Engineer to ensure that the project schedules are accurate, logical, and aligned to the project targets. Work closely with the Operations Scheduler as it relates to assessing work plans, inclusive of those facility outages and turnarounds to determine synergies.
  3. Track, monitor, and analyze project schedules against the baseline, including identifying critical activities, and reviewing forecasts and progress achieved to date. These include project schedules developed internally as well as the Contractor’s project schedule.
  4. Develop reports on the progress of projects. This includes milestone and “look ahead” reports as well as reporting on Earned Value and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as SPI and CPI.
  5. Coordinate and provide project schedule updates to the Project Management Office. Ensure that the project schedule-related information on the Project PowerBI dashboard is accurate and updated as required.
  6. Communicate project progress and status via weekly/monthly reporting; facilitate weekly/monthly status meetings with the Project Manager/Lead Engineer and key stakeholders.
  7. Proactively identify, track and work with the Project Manager/Lead   Engineer to resolve potential scheduling issues and risks, specific to projects.
  8. Apply all aspects of proper scheduling techniques including predecessors, successors, links, and baseline.
  9. Review pr o j e c t milestones in conjunction with the project scope and identify any anomalies or inconsistencies.
  10. Identify the impact on dependencies, resources, and other project-level issues when changes are implemented.
  11. Aid in developing and implementing enhanced project control systems.
  12. Liaise with the Operations Scheduler to identify synergies and develop implementation plans between the Operations maintenance and capital expenditure Workplans and Engineering’s project work plans.

 

Job Specifications

Minimum Acceptable Academic Qualifications

BSc. in Engineering from an accredited tertiary institution.

 

The following certification will be an asset:

  • Registered Engineer with the Board of Engineering
  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) or Project Management
  • Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI)

 

OR

 

A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited tertiary institution, and a Registered Engineer with the Board of Engineering.

 

The following certification will be an asset:

  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) or Project Management
  • Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI)

 

AND

 

Minimum Number of Years of Relevant Experience

 

Eight (8) years of related working experience in the petroleum or Petro-Chemical sector, of which five (5) years should be in a project environment (project development or project execution).

 

 

OR

 

A UTT or NEC Technician Diploma in Chemical/Process Engineering, Electrical/Electronic, Mechanical, Instrumentation, or a related discipline.

 

The following certification will be an asset:

  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) or Project Management
  • Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI)

 

AND

 

Minimum Number of Years of Relevant Experience

 

Ten (10) years of working experience in the petroleum or Petro-chemical sector, of which seven (7) years should be in a project environment (project development or project execution).

 

Specific Skills and Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of Primavera (P6) and Microsoft Projects
  • Competence with Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of project management techniques, (i.e., Critical Path Method and Earned Value
