Senior Legal Advisor

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:

The Senior Legal Advisor will work directly with the Group General Counsel/Corporate Secretary and will be responsible for assisting in safeguarding the Group’s interests by ensuring that business is conducted in a legally sound manner through management of legal risks, ensuring compliance and provision of competent legal advice.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Provides legal advice and opinions with respect to legal and corporate governance matters as required.
  2. Drafts/optimizes templates for key contracts (sponsorships, distribution, construction, supply of goods/services, advertising, agency, confidentiality, endorsements, financial transactions etc.), deeds, leases and other legal documents for the review and approval of Group General Counsel/Corporate Secretary.
  3. Attends court and represents the Group’s interests, as requested.
  4. Drafts and/or reviews legal arguments in relation to court matters (e.g. submissions, evidence and arguments, pleas in mitigation), as requested.
  5. Manages the Group’s trademarks and other intellectual property by liaising with and briefing agents on registration/renewal applications and opposing or defending trademark or other intellectual property disputes. 
  6. Manages special projects as identified and directed by the GC/CS primarily focused on increasing efficiency within the Legal/Corporate Secretariat department (on average, 1 project per quarter). This includes liaising and coordinating with relevant stakeholders and providing project updates and project reports.
  7. Assists the General Counsel/Corporate Secretary with the review of Company policies and procedures and makes recommendations in alignment with legislation and/or best practices.
  8. Assists the GC/CS in coordinating, and ensuring the successful completion of, training to internal stakeholders on legal and corporate governance matters as deemed appropriate by the Group General Counsel/Corporate Secretary.
  9. Assists the Group General Counsel/Corporate Secretary with confidential corporate legal matters.
  10. Performs any other duties as may be deemed necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Laws from a recognized University.
  • Legal Education Certificate (L.E.C) or equivalent.
  • Between 8 to 15 years of experience as an Attorney-at-Law, with a background in litigation,

specializing in the areas of corporate law, intellectual property and drafting legal documents.

  • An equivalent combination of qualifications and experience.
