Our Client, an organisation in the Financial Services sector, is seeking to fill the position of Head, Risk.

JOB SUMMARY

The Head, Risk is accountable to the Managing Director and will oversee the Company’s risk management architecture including the management, measurement, monitoring and control of credit, investment, market, operational and other enterprise risks.

The incumbent is expected to provide high level, timely risk assessments to the Company to aid in meeting its risk adjusted performance objectives and to establish and communicate policies and procedures Company-wide.

  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Accountable for maintaining, improving and implementing the Company’s risk and control governance framework to ensure efficient and effective operations and to improve the risk and control environment.

1) Risk Appetite and Culture

  • Establish and communicate the risk appetite, limits, policies and procedures and/or recommend same for approval as applicable;
  • Encourage accountability across the Company for identifying and managing risks while inculcating an environment for the open communication of same

2) Credit Risk Management

  • Create and update a framework of relevant systems, credit policies and practices to ensure that the business operates in accordance with the organization’s risk appetite;
  • Ensure that Risk Adjudicators apply practical and timely decision making within delegated limits according to transaction risk parameters;
  • Apply the use of appropriate quantification and measurement techniques to ensure that credit risks are identified, understood and communicated;
  • Liaise with external regulators for credit risk issues as guided by the Managing Director
  • Develop, update, monitor and evaluate an appropriate credit scoring methodology/ risk rating system, on an ongoing basis, to  ensure effective application by all users
  • Direct review, management and reporting of special (high risk) loans/credits to the BOD and BOD Committees;

3) Market Risk Management

  • Develop, oversee and monitor the risk thresholds and limits associated with the management of market risks through the initial and ongoing review and approval of limits and excesses/extensions within delegated limits;
  • Implement the use of appropriate quantification and measurement techniques to ensure that market risks (price and interest rate) are captured and transparent.

4) Operational Risk Management

  • Develop, implement and update a framework for the Company’s Operational Risk Management function and ensure these operate effectively and efficiently to regulate and improve the organization’s control environment, including all risk and control policies and regulatory requirements;
  • Lead the strategic development, implementation and improvement of the operational risk framework, including policies, methodologies, measurement, risk analysis and monitoring;
  • Ensure all regulatory risks for the organization are anticipated, communicated and managed by the Managing Director and Board Committees and other key internal/external stakeholders through the design and implementation of applicable policies.

5) Risk Measurement, Monitoring and Controls

  • Develop and maintain a framework for effective risk measurement and assessment systems, including a stress testing framework;
  • Identify, measure, and monitor current and emerging risks;
  • Review special transactions above established limits involving risks to the Company and make recommendations to the Managing Director and/or the BOD/ BOD Committees;

6) Risk Reporting

  • Report regularly and as needed to the Managing Director and BOD/BOD Committees on portfolio risk profile versus Company risk appetite and any significant risk positions or issues.

7) General

  • Strategic Planning
    • Support the MD and Senior Management in determining, developing and implementing the Company’s strategy objectives and ensuring its alignment with the Company’s risk appetite;
    • Establish the vision, objectives and plans for the Head, Risk’s areas of responsibility and ensure these are in alignment with the Company’s strategic objective
  • Internal Client Service
    • Work collaboratively with the Company’s business units and provide alternative, beneficial solutions where appropriate
    • Establish and maintain a healthy balance of expectations between the Company and all legal and regulatory stakeholders;
    • Maintain relationships with external clients and regulatory bodies.
  • Other
    • Contribute to the Company’s annual financial plan and budget;
    • Promote a culture of integrity.
  • Any other duties assigned by the MD
  

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s Degree in Finance, MBA or ACCA
  • The Financial Risk Manager certification from the Global Association of Risk Professionals would be an asset.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in Risk Management
  • Experience in retail and commercial lending would be an asset.
