Background and context
Acting on the behalf of our client, a leader in the retail sector in Barbados, we are seeking to recruit a suitably qualified and experienced Systems Administrator. The purpose of the role is support and develop the organization through prompt and reliable technical support, the delivery of high-quality service consistently, and the achievement of end user satisfaction, and playing a pivotal role in the ongoing education of staff and customers.
Duties & Responsibilities Summary
Technical support
- Troubleshoot hardware/ software problems and system failures
- Identify trends and source problems and recommend/initiate corrective action
- Provide client support and technical issue resolution via email, phone and other electronic media or face to face
- Provide training to clients in use of systems and applications
- Prioritize and manage many open support cases simultaneously
- Conduct electrical safety checks on equipment and computers when necessary
- Test and evaluate new technology and provide recommendations
- Install and configure computer hardware operating systems and applications
- Replace computer/ system parts as required
Backup administration
- Perform backup of all company data in accordance with company data management policy
- Test backups at scheduled intervals and ensure that they are in line with company policy
- Monitor backup jobs and ensure they are completed successfully
- Create and implement backup strategies
Virus protection
- Monitor environment for possible threats from viruses and malware
- Ensure antivirus protection definitions are up to date and in line with company policy
- Monitor and schedule regular scans on protected machines
Documentation
- Prepare documentation of systems and software for permanent records
- Log all support requests
- Record all computer equipment and spare parts
Inventory management
- Maintain correct inventory levels by enforcing and ensuring that company procedures are adhered to
- Participate in stocktaking activities
- Assist in the coordination of hardware and personnel for stocktaking activities
- Train personnel in the use of hardware and software for stocktaking activities
Maintain security and safety protocol
- Maintain confidentiality of company information
- Notify supervisor of personnel situations or policy violations having an adverse effect on store operating performance
- Respond to spills and other hazards that may cause injury to self and others
- Use and maintain equipment in good working order
Create comfortable shopping and working environment
- Attend and participate in training sessions and activities
- Maintain good communications in the department and throughout the organization
- Comply with all company policies and regulations
- Perform other related duties as assigned and directed
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent study and experience.
- Preferred certifications and/or training: Microsoft Server 2003/2008 administration (MCSA, MCITP); database administration; network administration (Network+, CCNA), data storage and tools, Microsoft Office products (MOS).
- At least two (2) years System Administration experience.
- Experience within retail setting preferred, including knowledge of POS systems, data polling and inventory management.
- Good knowledge of computer hardware such as CPU, Memory, Disk, Network and Bios.
- Demonstrated ability to convey technical information through writing and speech to a non-technical audience so the recipients easily understand the information and can quickly and correctly apply it.
