Laboratory Technician

SCHOOL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (BATCE 6th FORM)

Job Summary:

 

The Lab Technician is responsible for providing direct technical support to the Science Department. The incumbent will carry out risk assessments as appropriate and ensure all lab/science-based teaching activities are carried out in accordance with extant school policies and/or best practice.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support for the Sixth Form Science Department.
  • Prepare apparatus, materials and solutions as directed by the Head of Department, Sciences
  • Issue, set up, check and modify equipment and apparatus for use in practical lab exercises.
  • Run trial experiments and prepare samples prior to lab sessions.
  • Guide students on the safe and effective use of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist with the supervision of students performing experiments.
  • Retrieve, store and label apparatus after lab sessions. 
  • Refill, replace and return unused supplies and reagents to its designated area.
  • Liaise with TRINCOL to dispose of waste laboratory materials in accordance with Health and Safety requirements.  
  • Maintain, fix or arrange for the repair of apparatus and equipment.
  • Maintain records and logs of all maintenance and servicing of equipment.
  • Check deliveries and reorder essential items as necessary.
  • Manage the inventory and account for losses.
  • Maintain lab documentation systems including organization of work sheets; filing; hazard data; chemical database and risk assessments.
  • Circulate and implement all appropriate Health and Safety regulations and practices with respect to the Laboratory setting.
  • Ensure Health and Safety regulations and safe practices are complied with at all times.
  • Ensure the labs are clean and secure when not in use.
  • Develop new systems in the Laboratory to improve the technical support service. ·
  • Use Quartzy to manage the Lab’s workflow
  • Other appropriate technical duties as requested by the Head of Department Sciences

 

Qualifications / Experience

  • 5 GCE/CXC O’ Levels inclusive of Mathematics, English and two (2) Science subjects 
  • Science Technician’s Diploma or Associate Degree in Laboratory Science. 
  • At least 1 year of work experience at an academic institution or a laboratory. 
  • Experience using Quartzy will be considered an asset.
