Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the vacant post of MARINE ENGINEER. The successful candidate, who must have practical and theoretical knowledge of marine engineering and serving as watch keeping officer on board an ocean-going vessel of at least 750 KW (1000 BHP).

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for carrying out maintenance and repairs on the engine room machinery, deck equipment and other machinery aboard the buoy tender, floating pier, as well as on all other company vessels and marine equipment including pilot boats, work boats and sea-walk floating pier. The incumbent also:

- Provides support as required for maintenance and repairs to navigational aids serviced by the buoy tender

- Assists in workshop when not required aboard the buoy tender or engaged with other marine equipment maintenance

- Serves as an Engineer on buoy tender as per vessel minimum manning certificate when assigned

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure that the engine rooms machinery space on all vessels are always maintained in clean and safe condition
  • Perform watch keeping duties on board the vessel as required
  • Assist in ensuring that all spares, oil levels, and tools are adequately maintained in keeping with classification society requirements
  • Facilitate electrical and welding maintenance and repairs to navigational aids serviced by buoy tender when required
  • Maintain accurate logbook records
  • Assist in maintaining all portable machinery and equipment on board including outboard engines, power washers, generators, and dredge pump

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Valid Marine Engineering Certificate of Competency STCW III/1 Officer in Charge of an engineering watch
  • Three years sea-going experience in marine engineering, of which at least 18 months must have been as an Engineer, Watch Keeping Officer on board an ocean-going vessel of 750 KW and over at the operational level

KNOWELEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of marine engineering.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of shipboard equipment, diesel engines, electrical equipment, steering systems, pumps, air condition systems and other equipment aboard vessels
  • Working knowledge of basic welding operations for emergency repairs on board and to assist with navigational aids maintenance.
  • Sound knowledge of marine safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
  • Communicate effectively orally and in written format
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and solve problems related to malfunctioning machinery, and effect necessary repairs
  • Execute planned maintenance system on marine vessels
  • Read and interpret technical manuals and engineering drawings
  • Strong self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Highly organised and be able to plan, prioritise and organise projects
  • Available to work varied hours, shifts and days
