DENTAL NURSE
VACANCY
Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the following position at the North-Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA).
DENTAL NURSE
The incumbent will be responsible for carrying out simple dental treatment on children (12 and under), identifying and charting characteristics of dental lesions, diseases and anomalies, relating them to oral pathological conditions developing, to determine, develop and execute treatment plans on patients which may include oral hygiene instructions and demonstrations using dental materials, instruments and equipment and applying medications to teeth, and to prepare oral health education materials.
Main Responsibilities:
- Obtain medical and dental history from parents and guardians of children.
- Examine and charts dental conditions.
- File and retrieve client records.
- Review medical history with parent/guardian.
- Determine treatment plan and schedule appointment as required.
- Recognize dental condition requiring special care and make referral to dentist.
- Give oral injections (anesthetic) via infiltration or nerve block as required for filling/extraction.
- Prepare teeth to be filled (deciduous and permanent teeth).
- Identify materials best suited to meet and type of filling required.
- Perform oral prophylaxis and apply topical fluorides to teeth to prevent dental decay.
- Extract deciduous teeth under local anesthetic.
- Give post-operative instructions (fillings, florid applications extractions).
- Demonstrate brushing of teeth and flossing techniques in clinic and schools.
- Prepare monthly/annual reports.
- Keep patient register and write up dental treatments administered to patients.
- Perform trouble-shooting of dental equipment (hand pieces, chairs).
- Prepare oral health education material for use in clinic and schools.
- Travel to pre/primary schools to conduct oral health education lectures.
- Consult with principals of primary and pre-schools for oral health education lectures, promotional programme, Dental Outreach Programme and set up appointments to screen children.
- Check stock level of dental material and prepare requisition for materials as needed.
- Plan and execute Oral Health Promotion Activities/Programmes locally, ministerial and with corporate sponsors nationally.
- Sterilize dental instruments and equipments.
Minimum Qualifications, Training and Experience:
- Five (5) O’level passes, inclusive of Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject.
- Certificate of training in Dental Nursing.
- Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid will be an asset
- Registered with the Dental Council of Trinidad and Tobago.
- Computer Literate in Microsoft Office Suite.
* Certificates acquired at foreign universities MUST be supported by certified transcripts as well as evidence that the completed programme is accredited in Trinidad and Tobago.
