JOB SUMMARY

 

The post has island-wide and national significance but with emphasis in Grand Turk, Salt Cay and South Caicos, mandated to plan, direct, promote and implement DECR’s interpretive and educational programmes in order to achieve the goals of the Department. The Environmental Officer is the primary liaison between DECR and the wider community in terms of public awareness of the objectives and outputs of the Department.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Oversee and manage the daily operations of the National Environmental Centre or similar facility in other Islands.
  • Plan, design, coordinate, facilitate and implement a range of environmental education programmes (in coordination with proper authorities).
  • Serve as spokesperson for DECR and undertake outreach efforts to promote the department’s objectives to all audiences.
  • Prepare grant applications to acquire funding to promote environmental public awareness and related activities.
  • Liaise with the Research & Development Unit/Science Group to present the Department’s scientific outputs to the community at large.
  • Work cooperatively with the National Trust and other non-governmental agencies to increase public environmental awareness.
  • Design and conduct educational presentations to specific stakeholder groups, such as fishers.
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment, tools and other assets of DECR and ensure their proper safekeeping and maintenance.
  • Prepare regular press releases informing the public of DECR’s activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by proper authorities.
  • Adhere to all other Public Service codes, rules and regulations.

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Ecology or other related Environmental Studies field
  • An Educational Certificate is an asset
  • Must be able and willing to swim, with SCUBA certification (e.g. PADI)
  • A valid Driver’s License

 

Experience:

  • The position requires a minimum of two years (2) years’ experience in community engagement or similar and related projects environment field.  Work experience with the public and education will be an asset.

 

SALARYGRADE 6 $ 33,415.00 per annum
