SJE Consultants Ltd is a forward-thinking and dynamic Infrastructure Engineering Consultancy Firm based in Kingston, Jamaica, involved in a series of Infrastructure projects.

THE ROLE

Under general supervision, the Drainage Engineer will be engaged in urban and rural drainage designs, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, erosion and flood control. This includes developing drainage solutions for brownfield and greenfield areas, highways, and flood control solutions for major river systems.

The role involves reviewing construction drawings, developing quantities, report writing, site visits, and field assessments of existing drainage infrastructure to inform runoff calculations and drainage assessments. The Drainage Engineer will apply advanced engineering techniques using CAE and CAD applications to develop, assess, design, and monitor drainage solutions, stormwater management systems, and related engineering infrastructure.

Reports To: Water Resources and Climate Change Department Manager

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Design & Engineering

  • Design conventional and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) for freeway, arterial roadways, and site development at all project stages to AASHTO and applicable standards
  • Apply hydraulic engineering principles to innovate drainage solutions
  • Conduct hydraulic and system design for complex environments including erosion control, scour, and sediment transport
  • Perform quantity calculations and cost estimates for drainage solutions

Analysis & Modeling

  • Undertake detailed hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, including 1D/2D analysis
  • Produce and verify engineering analytical data to ensure design accuracy
  • Conduct flood risk assessments for planning applications
  • Apply innovative technology and value engineering solutions to project challenges

Documentation & Coordination

  • Prepare detailed calculations, drawings, design packages, and technical reports for government agencies and private sector
  • Review construction details to ensure design compliance and constructability
  • Coordinate with CAD/BIM/3D modeling teams and provide technical guidance to designers and engineers
  • Build strong client relationships and work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, or Water Engineering from an accredited institution (Master's Degree preferred)
  • PE (Professional Engineer) license highly preferred, or ability to obtain one
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in water resources engineering projects with emphasis on road and highway drainage design
  • Regional experience required

REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

Technical Expertise

  • Sound knowledge of hydrology and hydraulics principles
  • Understanding of Water Sensitive Design and Sustainable Drainage Design (SuDS)
  • Mathematical capability for calculation sheets and analysis

Software Proficiency

  • Hydrologic/Hydraulic Modeling: InfoWorks ICM (1D/2D) - COMPULSORY, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, HY-8, Autodesk Storm & Sanitary Analysis
  • CAD & GIS: AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS Pro
  • General: Microsoft Suite
