The Department of Health Services invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for the position of Coordinator Laboratory Services.
Mandate
Plan, organize, coordinate and manage the availability, effectiveness and efficiency of required medical technology services in support of the health care system in accordance with established quality standards.
Key Functions
- Plan, develop and manage the daily operations of the medical laboratory services.
- Ensure that the technical capabilities of the unit conform with established quality standards as appropriate
- Ensure the professional growth and development of staff.
- Ensure and manage the capability readiness of the Pathology Unit
Key Duties
- Plan, organize, manage and coordinate the daily operations of the Pathology Unit.
- Manage the human, financial and material (physical) resources of the Pathology Unit.
- Advocate for and access (human, material, financial) resources for the Pathology Unit.
- Review and update existing policies, procedures and guidelines. Formulate new policies, procedures and guidelines relevant to the Pathology Unit in response to changes in new technology
- Prioritize and conduct operational research for the Pathology Unit and participate in national and regional research initiatives.
- Develop short, medium and long term strategic plans for the Pathology Unit and implement approved plans.
- Develop, implement and monitor patient/client feedback systems/mechanisms.
- Maintain an adequate stock of medical equipment and other supplies and ensure they are stored safely and used appropriately.
- Provide leadership to staff through coaching, counselling and encouraging professional growth and development.
- Conduct regular staff meetings.
- Ensure the maintenance of a high standard of discipline and professional ethics by Pathology Unit staff.
- Interpret and ensure compliance with regulations and standards.
- Participate in the development and management of the approved budget for the Pathology Unit.
- Ensure that staff adhere to standards, policies, protocols and procedures for the Pathology Unit.
- Participate in meetings, conferences, workshops and serve on committees as required.
- Orient and educate new staff and other staff as directed.
- Prepare progress reports as required, quarterly, bi-annually and annually, on the operations of the Pathology Unit.
- Ensure that staff are knowledgeable of the written Hospital Disaster Preparedness Plan and their role in the event of any disaster.
- Supervise, monitor and evaluate staff performance and complete timely Performance Appraisals.
- Provide technical advice and guidance to other health professionals.
- Liaise with other health professionals to ensure the provision of timely and accurate laboratory services.
- Participate in staff meetings, conferences, rounds and serve on Committees as required/requested.
- Make recommendations and coordinate on strategic planning for the Pathology Unit.
- Perform other related duties as required by the job function.
Personal Qualifications
The incumbent should possess sound knowledge of the techniques, work methods,
theory, principles and practices of the pathology function, the equipment, facilities and
resource requirements for effective pathological investigation and research, interpersonal
skills, computer skills, communicative, analytical and diagnostic ability and interpretative
judgement.
Such knowledge and skills are normally obtained in the acquisition of a Bachelors Degree
in Medical Technology together with a Certificate/Diploma in Management.
Should have at least five (5) years post qualification experience in a similar or related job.
